Christmas Time Visits and Local News in Bield Area

Mrs Arthur Lovas reports Greg Bailes injured his hand and hospitalized in Winnipeg. Local families shared Christmas with Bailes and relatives in Dauphin and Winnipeg. Numerous visitors from Camp Borden Edmonton Winnipeg Kenora and other towns spent the holidays with area residents. A Whist Drive sponsored by the Rink Club yielded high prizes to Bessy Bailes Alf Rice and low prizes to Benny Saasund and Dorothy Jaasund with Frank Bailes Sr winning the door prize. Carl Lovas hospitalized at focal hospital.

Tummel U C W Christmas Meeting at Robin's Home

Tummel United Church Women met at Robin's home with 11 members and 48 guests. The president reported from the Presbytery meeting. Several parcels were packed for bachelors and the Senior Citizens Home in Neepawa. The next meeting is set for January 13 1971 at Mrs Bus Brook's home.

Roblin Bantam Mustangs Win Four Straight In Snake Creek League

Roblin Bantam Mustangs open season with four straight wins in Snake Creek League beating Russell 5-2 Foxwarren 7-4 Angusville 3-2 and Inglis 13-2. They split exhibition games 2-1 and 7-6 with Grandview and Kamsack 11 12 with Dauphin. Terry Kostick leads with 14 points 7 goals 7 assists. Sanders Celebrate 40th Wedding Anniversary in Roblin

Mr and Mrs L S Ted Sanders of Roblin were honored guests at a dinner by their family marking their 40th wedding anniversary. A come and go tea followed with over 100 friends and relatives attending to offer best wishes.

Out of town guests came from Dauphin Winnipeg and Lynn Lake and congratulatory messages were received from Edmonton and Greenwood. B. C. and Mrs. Sanders married December 23 1930 in Dauphin Manitoba. They lived in Merridale Robbin aside from five years in Dauphin during Mr Sanders air force service.

Holiday Visitors and Relatives Gather Across Prairie Towns

Visiting at multiple homes during Christmas and New Year were nieces Diane Traub of Winnipeg and Jo Ann Traub of The Pas. Extended family members from Kamsack, Ontario, Roblin, Benito, Virden, Brantford, Tisdale, and Winnipeg joined gatherings, with several households hosting friends and relatives over the holidays.

Fire destroys Roblin hardware store in early Monday blaze

Ross's Allied Hardware on Main Street Roblin burned early Monday after midnight. Firefighters contained the blaze to the hardware and prevented spread to Simpsons Sears, Roblin Shopping Centre, and Roblin Trading Co. Ltd. Owner Ross Kozak was shot in the thigh during the incident and received treatment before release. RCMP and Manitoba Fire Commissioners investigate cause. Firefighters praised for keeping the fire under control despite strong winds. Local citizens hindered efforts by driving over hoses.

Roblin Christmas Decorating Contest Winners Named

The Roblin and District Chamber of Commerce sponsored annual contest judged residences and businesses December 23 1970. Peter Popoff and W Sutton homes received honorable mention while Peter Popoff’s residence led in points but cannot win two years in a row. Roblin Trading Co Ltd and others earned business honors with Heming's Jewellery Shield and several honorable mentions.

Togo Seniors Hold Christmas Party at Masonic Temple

About forty attended the Togo Senior Citizens Christmas Party on December 16 in the Masonic Temple hosted by the Order of the Eastern Star. Ladies received Christmas Rose corsages, and gentlemen poinsettia boutonnieres. Eight pupils performed a lively program including Christmas choral numbers, solos, monologue, pantomime, and a hymn sing.

Social Season Visitors Fill Roblin Homes with Christmas Cheer

A long roster of guests spent the holidays with Roblin families. Miss Sandra Wardle hosted relatives from The Pas and Gillam. Winnipeg and Dauphin visitors joined Wilms Buick, the Jakemans, the Oliphants, and many others at parents’ and siblings’ homes for Christmas and New Year gatherings. Relatives hailed from Brandon, Yorkton, Sudbury, Waskada, MacGregor, Dauphin, and Edmonton, with U of M and U of M staff guests noted among the households.

Air Cadets parade boosts turnout and promotions

Attendance on Tuesday December 15 totaled 49 cadets with all four officers and two instructors present including Capt. Paul Galatiuk and Lt. G. L. Galatiuk. Best dressed cadet Ron Mench earned a lanyard and a dollar. several cadets promoted from ACI to LAC and LAC to Corporal. A Dec 11 12 tour of OMB Portage La Prairie featured a four-stop aviation tour with 39 cadets, CFR Rivers bus transport, and demonstrations in traffic control radar, hangar aircraft, meteorology and safety gear. The following day December 22 featured former cadet Warrant Officer Jim Turnbull and Gerald Halvas inspecting alongside senior staff at Royal Roads.

Progress on New Arena Roof Hops Ahead Despite Cold

Rink Corner reports steady progress on the arena project with the first ply of lumber on the roof and the second ply starting. Ice surface installation may begin after roofing. Volunteers are urged from hockey groups to install posts and boards to flood the rink. Donations total $64,000 from individuals and groups, with proceeds near $10,000. fund-raising aims to finish in 1971 as finances run tight.

Merridale 4-H Beef Club Reorganizes At Hawryluk Home

The Merridale 4-H Beef Club held its reorganizational meeting on Friday December 18 at the Hawryluk residence. President Herbert Cockerill and Randy Hawryluk were elected vice president with Mervin Cockerill as secretary and Maryvel Cockerill as treasurer. Mr Calvin Cockerill replaces longtime leader Calvin Ludwig who resigned after eight years. Two new members Kenneth Proskie and Eddie Myshchuk joined. A lunch hosted by Mrs A Cockerill followed the meeting.

Horticultural Library to Honor Dr. Skinner at Manitoba

A Dr. F. L. Skinner Memorial Library will be opened at the University of Manitoba funded by a $5,000 memorial fund raised from gardeners and horticulturists in Canada, the United States, England and Holland. The library will house contemporary and historical works donated by friends of Dr. Skinner who introduced 248 plant varieties during his career. He arrived in Canada’s prairies in 1895 from Scotland and is noted for the Dropmore Scarlet Trumpet Honeysuckle as a landmark contribution. He received honors from Canadian and international bodies, including an honorary degree from Manitoba in 1947 and the Order of the Buffalo in 1967.

Mr and Mrs Jay Gryderman of The Pay visited at Orville Wilsons for New Years. Ronnie and Doug Radford left for Thompson on June 2nd where they will seek winter employment. Mr and Mrs Garry Kennedy of Swan River and Mr and Mrs Dale Apple and family of Margo were Christmas guests of the Orville Wilsons. Home for Christmas at the Jack Radford home were Mr and Mrs Ralph Daniluk and family from Revelstoke Mr and Mrs John Rad ford from Snow Bake Mr and Mrs Wallie McFayden and family from Lipton Mr and Mrs Bill Radford and girls from Lannigan and Mr and Mrs George Radford and family from Rossburn. Nurse Lois Nastrom Graduates in Duncan Proficiency Award

Lois Nastrom formerly of Roblin district graduates as a Licensed Practical Nurse at Duncan General Hospital and wins the Proficiency Award in nursing. She began the program in Nanaimo in November 1969 and completed the Vocational School in Nanaimo, graduating October 21, 1972.

Roblin Chamber Promotes Christmas Draw For Steer And Cash

The Roblin and District Chamber of Commerce sponsored a Christmas promotion with a draw for an eleven hundred pound steer and four $25 cash prizes. Names were entered at purchases in Roblin and the draws occurred December 24 1970 at Dietrichs Radio and T V. Miss Sylvia Stasiuk of Roblin won the steer while four others from Roblin Wroxton and Roblin area won cash prizes.
