New Manitoba license form printed by new machine

A new high speed machine at the Manitoba Government printing plant handles over 159,000 motor vehicle registration forms for mailing in the new year. The machine automates folding and inserting envelopes, while a four station collating unit and staff reductions cut time from weeks to about ten to twelve days. Motorists can obtain 1960 license plate validation strips by mail with a cheque or at 110 issuing agencies, with 60 percent of users in 1959 using this method.

Manitoba Vital Statistics reports 1959 births at about 22 600, with May and July strongest. Deaths totaled 7 188, under a third of birth numbers, and June saw the most marriages at 986 as the year ended with rising population trends.

Roblin Volunteer Fire Department battled two large blazes during late 1959 and New Year’s Day. A chimney fire at Mrs. Mitchell’s home caused no damage. The Roblin Solo Store fire damaged the basement sub-floor beams and merchandise, with total losses in the thousands. A chimney fire at Andy Lapitsky’s home was quickly put out at 10 a.m. on New Year’s Day.

Special Meeting of Shell River Council in 1959

A Shell River Rural Municipality special meeting chaired by Reeve F. H. Wilson discussed passing a list of accounts and multiple by laws. The by laws covered street light power, tax cancellations, snow plow requests, health officer retainer, public works grants for culverts and bridge construction, and intermunicipal cost sharing with Park 2. The session adjourned with next meeting set for January 5, 1960 and a detailed accounts list approved for payment.
