Ground crews and snowmaking teams at Asessippi Ski Area work around the clock to build snow for a long awaited season. Favorable temperatures are needed to firm the snow before opening, which was set for December 17. Skiers will wait a bit longer but the delay promises a worthwhile start.
The Manitoba Tourism Industry celebrated its high achievers with awards. Kathy Swann of Parkland Tourism and Parkland West Economic Development received the Tourism Marketing Award for a strong promotional campaign that boosts provincial tourism.
Chevyl Digby and Gail Ruf, co owners of In Good Taste in Saskatoon and Calgary distributor support, unveil a refrigerated free Christmas pudding and fruit cake line. The venture began in 1989 as a catering business by Digby and Gaye Lenderbeck.
In Shoal Lake a Reform Party hearing drew about 100 attendees where area farmers directed sharp criticism at Jean Chretien and the Liberal government. MP Inky Mark and Gerry Ritz also faced questions as farmers argued the value of food is undervalued.
The Parkland Industrial Hemp Growers report their members have received the initial cheque from Consolidated Growers and Processors. Three payments are planned for those elected to be paid in installments. CGP COO Mark Kueller declined to comment on the payment or on plans for a Dauphin hemp processing facility.
Agricore workers vote 60 percent in favor of a two year contract ending a month long strike. The agreement causes dissatisfaction as Manitoba members face lower wage scales than under a prior Manitoba Pool contract, while Alberta voters largely supported the deal. Of 850 employees, 400 were on strike, mostly in Manitoba.
