A reader argues for teaching local government in schools to combat civic apathy. He notes many elections go unchallenged, urges year round civic engagement, and suggests students learning local workings may mobilize parents and strengthen democracy.
Roblin Mason ic Lodge installed officers for 1953 on December 8. Installing Master was Bro Jack McKinnon of Russell. Names include Worshipful Master James S Ward Senior Warden John Haines Junior Warden J Stewart Treasurer F Starr Secretary H Maslove Chaplain R Misener Senior Deacon John Kines Director of Ceremonies Allan Martin Senior Steward Earl Waters Junior Steward Earl McIntyre Organist Thos Roberts Guard Earl Stauffer Tyler W D Young.
Mayor W Ford chairs a Roblin council meeting adopting Nov 5 1952 minutes and approving payments including Manitoba Power Co and utilities. It also approves assessment adjustments for several lots and right of way reallocations, appoints W Uross to memorial hall committee, sets skating fees, agrees to a rink manager at 150 monthly, accepts Mrs W Miller rink booth rent, approves building permits, and moves January meeting to afternoon.
Roblin Chapter No. 42 O.E.S. installed new officers at the December 2 regular meeting. Worthy Matron Marguerite Fisher, Worthy Patron A L Seymour, Associate Matron Amy Adam, Associate Patron Harry Maslove, and other officers were installed by C Peterson with assistance. Retiring officers received gifts. members exchanged Christmas gifts and a short program preceded lunch.
The Roblin Branch of the Red Cross Society met at Knox United Church basement on December 4. Reports show 1040 dollars raised in the annual canvas and 207 blood donors attended the October clinic. New officers include Hon. President R D Robertson and President I L Mitchell with Dr J Carlyle Parker as secretary and K Riley as treasurer.
The Knox United Church Sunday School held its White Gift service on December 7 with the theme Sharing Christmas With God's Other Children. Superintendent Mrs J C Parker led the service. 109 gifts were presented by Catherine Hill and Elaine Burak for Korean Relief and the Indian School at Carlyle Saskatchewan.
R R Robinson of Russell elected president with J Zaporzan Gilbert Plains as vice president and Ray Taylor Roblin as secretary treasurer. Four teams Dauphin Juniors Gilbert Plains Roblin Russell to compete starting December 17 at Gilbert Plains Russell and Roblin hosts. 12 game schedule to be finalized December 14 in Roblin.
Word has been received of the death of Frederick Amiel Von Holt once a district resident. He died at his farm home near Woodlawn USA at age 77. He is survived by his wife Etta a son Chester of Springfield Missouri and three daughters Leona Ludwig Shortdale Roblin and Hazel Smith Burlington. The Review extends sympathy to the bereaved.
Mrs Anna Philipew longtime Zelena resident and wife of Metro Philipew died December 4 in Zelena. Born in West Ukraine she and her husband settled in 1905. Survived by three children Dan Ewaschuk Dauphin Steve Zelena and Mary Sadowich Zelena. Seven grandchildren. Funeral services were held in Zelena with burial in the Greek Orthodox cemetery on December 7.
Mrs Sel ma Kolstad died November 29 in Winnipeg at age 77. She was born May 2, 1892 in Montevedio Minnesota and married June 29, 1912 in Chippewa County. She lived in Togo Saskatchewan since 1919 and moved to Roblin last year. Survived by husband Carl and four sons Leonard Clifford Kenneth Edward and four daughters Ada Caroline Delores Ruby. Service led by Dr J C Parker with pallbearers Ferdinand Hack Peter Ludwig Frank Ludwig Sam Comfort David Hunter Harold Klein. Interment in Roblin cemetery.
The community organized a co operative drive to fund the British and Foreign Bible Society with 147 50 sent via Roblin churches to support translation printing and distribution. The society reports 7 095 391 copies in 808 languages last year with large volumes in Korea South America Hong Kong India and Africa. Demand outstrips supply and the society seeks increased support to meet requests.
