Manitoba pauses five percent tax on grain storage units

Manitoba Finance Minister Gurney Evans announced a cabinet approved suspension of the 5 percent sales tax on portable and prefabricated grain storage facilities from June 1 to December 31. Evans urged Ottawa to mirror the move and called for refunds to purchasers since June. He said the measure helps farmers amid weak markets and a likely good crop. The action applies to all portable or prefabricated granaries, including wooden or metal units. A refund process requires proof the facilities are for farm use.

Manitoba Hog Handling Facility Aims to Boost Industry

The Manitoba Hog Commission reports strong support for a modern handling complex to spur growth. Manitoba accounts for 9.2 percent of Canadian hog production with about 2,000 producers selling weekly and 71 percent using teletype auction. Manitoba hog production in 1967 exceeded $32 million as the commission notes teletype sales have benefited producers and narrowed price gaps with Toronto. The commission includes five producer and processor representatives led by D. F. Rose as chairman and executive director L. Munro.
