A Manitoba columnist critiques high school standards and the heavy 40 week year. He questions why failure rates reach 30 to 35 percent in senior grades and blames exam boards, home study, and unequal school resources while urging parental involvement and practical schooling reforms.

Purple Butter coupons 20 21 22 23 valid now. expire August 31. Coupons 24 25 valid August 19. expire September 40. Each half-pound. Brown Meat coupons 8 9 10 11 valid now. expire August 31. Coupon 12 expires August 31. Coupon 14 valid August 28. expire September 39.
Plans are under way to issue No 3 ration books late in August so every consumer has a new book by expiry of the old. No 2 coupons mostly expire September 2 with third issue distribution starting a week or ten days before. Local ration boards across Canada prepare campaign following last September’s pattern. Hundreds of volunteers will be recruited to help.
Roblin District surpassed its campaign quota by buying ten depth charges and raising 954 dollars, topping the 720 dollar target. Director Waddy of Roblin led the effort with Mrs. J Grundy of Makaroff and others assisting, while Miss Canada’s of Roblin sold 209 messages and all citizens are thanked for their Stamp-o-Grams support.
Britain and the Royal Air Force press forward with a planned offensive against German logistics. Spitfires sweep over occupied France and Belgium while cannon fire targets locomotives, with RAF claims of about two locomotives damaged per day. Norwegian squadrons are among the first to receive the upgraded Spitfires as part of this effort.

Miss Lily Crawley visits with her mother in town. Cpl Ken Adam spends furlough at home from Camp Borden. August church services moved to 2 pm due to tent meetings at Grandview. Tpr John Greenaway has arrived overseas safely. Mrs E S Vanstone and grandson Douglas Raynbird depart Winnipeg after two weeks at Madge Lake. LAC R T McBride stationed at 105 SFTS Dauphin spent weekend home. Shackletons and Prouses visit Kelvington family at Madge Lake.
P O Robertson returns to Winnipeg on furlough after 45 day and night raids over North Africa and Sicily. He wears the American Air Force Medal earned with 25 Canadians in RAF units. He served in El Alamein, Mareth Line, and three Sicily missions. He notes Sicily bombing easier than North Africa and that raids occurred at 8 to 10 thousand feet. Robertson enlisted in 1940 finishing school. He is one of five brothers in the armed forces with Nelson in the RCAF overseas, Donald in the RCAF in Canada, and Chris with the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders in Canada.
