Mr Harold Wells’s mother died in Little Clacton England on March 21, and the Wells couple welcomed a daughter on March 18. Local news notes praise Good Friday helpers at Mr Robert Aldersay’s, and Shell River Agricultural Society plans a May 19 event with Minister McKenzie attending. The Robin Local discuss sugar beets and a visit from a Duck Lake group to process beets this fall. Diptheria Prevention Week is April 28–29. toxoid protection is urged with three injections, via family doctors.

Togo News School Closed For East Holidays

News notes from Togo include visits by Mrs. Thelma Davis to Sturgis and Mrs. McAllen to Kamsack, while A. Taylor shipped stock to Winnipeg. Home-Makers Club met at Mrs. Abercrombie. Anglican W.A. dance at Davis Hall with prizewinners announced.

Methodist District Meeting Set in Roblin

The Manitoba district quarterly meeting of the Free Methodist Church will be at Roblin Free Methodist Church from April 21 to 23 with Rev. F W Wees of Regina Saskatchewan as guest. Activities include services Friday evening Saturday morning and Sunday, a Love Feast and sacraments, Sunday School and missionary service.

Merridale Kelly Cockerill’s saw mill ends season

Merridale Kelly Cockerill’s saw mill finished the season’s operations last week. Newcomers are reported as coming to reside on unoccupied farms nearby. Mrs B Cockerill and Mrs R Peyser made seven quilts and held a good record in carding wool. Nostrom Bros have been cutting railway ties in the bush north of here and are sawing them with plans to float them down the Valley river.

Ottawa Week by Week Budget Debate Runs Quiet

The budget session in Parliament closes with little visible interest as MPs finish four months of talks. The debate touched on the railway bill and private member measures, with emphasis shifting to upcoming Shipping and Treasury issues.

Last Week In The Legislature Reached Debates On Dams and Debt

Estimates of expenditure for tification sparked a full press debate on the province s educational system with focus on University estimates. The Turgeon Commission was discussed as the House passed a modified form of D L Campbell s resolution to build a dam across the Fairford River to control Lake Manitoba s water level. J W Pratt introduced a bill to require fire insurance firms to pay full coverage on total losses. The Provincial Treasurer proposed canceling rural credit society charters unable to repay funds. A new system of enlarged school administration areas was tested in unorganized territory grouping 12 to 20 districts under one assessor and one secretary treasurer. The Agricultural Committee heard calls to amend the Debt Adjustment Act to ease loans for home builders. A Debt Adjustment progress report urged tightening crop mortgage terms and expanding the D A Board with practical farming experience. The committee urged extending protections and preventing borrowers from contracting out of the act. The government abandoned plans for a one percent commodity tax amid strong opposition. The Provincial Treasurer introduced another direct tax measure.
