A Manitoba agriculture official says soil tests are crucial for efficient fertilizer use as dry conditions may persist. After 1976 harvests, tests from 10 000 fields show 80 percent of stubble fields need nitrogen, while only 20 percent of summer fallow do. Samples can be taken after frost, with results in 5 to 7 days and analysis costing 10 dollars per field.
