Manitoba fields require more nitrogen after a dry period. Acting soil testing director Ken McGill notes 80 percent of stubble fields in the province show low soil nitrogen, urging farmers to perform soil tests before fertilizing this spring.
A Manitoba agriculture official says soil tests are crucial for efficient fertilizer use as dry conditions may persist. After 1976 harvests, tests from 10 000 fields show 80 percent of stubble fields need nitrogen, while only 20 percent of summer fallow do. Samples can be taken after frost, with results in 5 to 7 days and analysis costing 10 dollars per field.
A corrected Letter to the Editor clarifies funding sources for the Keystone Pioneer Museum Inc. It states dependence on grants from municipalities and towns and provincial government. It also notes that public donations for moving the church will be gratefully received by the board of directors.
Amateur Manitoba residents are invited to enter the Manitoba Moods Photography Contest part of Manitoba Day celebrations May 12.
