Roanoke sixty five years ago recalls wartime life and a growing city before the 1861 hostilities. The Zolicoffer house and other grand structures stood amid stone pikes, parklands, and military patrols as residents endured siege, guard duties, and homefront tensions.
Rural route postmaster W F Wake completed a tour of inspection noting many mail boxes sit too high or low from the ground and the approaches to the boxes are poor. He urges patrons to place their names on the box and improve access.
Mr and Mrs Frank Spencer and family of Waynwheel Texas arrived Tuesday after a six day auto trip of about 1200 miles. They were laid up over a day on the road but report crops are good and times are prosperous in their Texas section.
The Pleasant Chapel Christian Endeavor Society held its monthly meeting at Miss Lillian McCombs home. Miss Altha Simons led the choir with Florence Rice at the piano. Milo Dinius gave roll call as Glen Rupert led the business session. The evening ended with games social time and a lap supper. Everyone reported a good time.
Telephone company staff hosted a Monday birthday gathering for Miss Cleo Hines. The event featured a pleasant evening with attendees, followed by ice cream and cake for all present.
John Trainer, defendant in a divorce suit brought by Amy E. Trainer, secured a divorce in circuit court Monday morning. His cross complaint accused Mrs. Trainer of illicit relations and sought custody of their two children.

Services next Sunday include 9:15 morning school, 10:50 sermon by Pastor G F Byrer on how worship reveals Christ, and a 7:30 Anti-Saloon League speaker. Christian Endeavor meets 6:80, Women’s Missionary Society meets Tuesday at 2:00 at Mrs. Feighner’s home.
A community box social and cake walk is announced for October 21 at the Methodist Episcopal Church two miles north of Roanoke. E Starbuck, president of the Laymen's Association, Indiana Fort Wayne area, invites attendance and participation in Christian activities including Sunday School at 9:30, morning worship led by Rev Baldridge, and the Junior League program.
