Roanoke Sixty Five Years Ago Today
A nostalgic reminiscence recalls Christmas customs in Roanoke, noting school holiday practices, neighborly feasts, and homegrown foods. Children gathered for early morning celebrations, mothers prepared wheat bread and pumpkin dishes, and forest fruits seasoned the table. Dances by local youths, old-time fiddlers, and period attire are described alongside a Lincoln era anecdote about Mrs. Lincoln's gown and a humorous quip from Abraham Lincoln.
