Plans To Bring North Carolina Symphony To Roanoke Rapids
Dr. Benjamin Swalin and Col. Hermit Hunter met Weldon Music Club and Roanoke Rapids officials to discuss bringing the North Carolina Symphony to the community. The society seeks contributions to fund free children’s concerts radio broadcasts and a season of major and chamber performances with admission by membership or door payment for non members. General membership is $1 and active membership $5 with an optional 20 cent federal tax.

Jenkins Home After 37 Months Overseas Peace Return
Sergt. Lloyd Jenkins of Roanoke Rapids returns home after 37 months overseas with the First Infantry Division. He served in Algeria Tunisia Sicily Normandy Rhineland Ardennes and Central Europe, earning the Bronze Star, eight bronze stars, a campaign ribbon, an American Defense Medal, and a good conduct medal.

Grosso Held Without Bond After Jail Hearing
Paul Grosso, 27, white, arrested last week on assault and rape charges involving his 16 year old daughter Ollie Juanita Strickland, appeared in Magistere Court with Laddie B. Strickland as the petitioner. Probable cause was found and he was bound over to the October Halifax Superior Court term starting October 22, and is jailed in Halifax County without bond.

Stewart Brothers Honorable Discharges In One Week
Three sons of Mr and Mrs Frank Stewart received honorable discharges within the same week from the armed forces. Woodrow served two and a half years in the Army with the 15th Air Force and spent 18 months overseas. Hank spent 44 months in the Marines with 14 months overseas. Neal served three years with the 82nd Airborne and was overseas 29 months.

Hodges Dies In Hospital In Richmond
Roanoke Rapids resident Hezzie Gerdyne Hodges 44 died at Saint Elizabeth Hospital in Richmond after a stomach ailment since March. Born in Whiteville NC he moved here in 1919 worked in mills then jewelry, bought the store at 222 Roanoke Avenue in 1932. Funeral at First Methodist Church Cedarwood Cemetery interment. Survived by widow Selma Hodges mother Lila Hodges daughters Mildred Marian Patricia Gwendolyn and H. G. Jr sister Mrs Claude Davis brother R B Hodges.
