A long list of residents visiting and staying in the area is followed by a detailed outline of the State Bureau of County Health. Started July 1 1917 the bureau funds and aims to demonstrate methods for county health work including quarantine soil pollution and school health units.
A three day gathering at Halifax engaged thirty six rural teachers from long term Halifax schools. The program aimed to organize schools, build community centers, and unify county efforts for better schools with leaders like Supt Akers Miss Cherry and Prof L C Brogden guiding workshops and talks on thrift and community life clubs.
Sunday September 21 1919 at St Matthews Roanoke Avenue features Holy Communion at 7 30 AM Sunday School at 9 45 with T W Mullen Supt and 11 AM and 8 PM Divine Services. After evening service the fourth quarterly conference will convene. Local notices include moves residents and business openings in Rosemary such as Taylor Drug Co C E Rigler Y M C A secretary and Cockade City Electric Shoe Shop.
The Roanoke Rapids Board of Commissioners invites a price and terms for selling to the town a parcel bounded by Third Street Roanoke Avenue the New Methodist Church property and an alley to be used as a city park. It also asks for the price to buy the Garage building on Roanoke Avenue between Second and Third Streets or to swap it for the land. The letter requests publication in the Roanoke Rapids Herald and a reply with a copy to the newspaper.
The Roanoke Rapids Band gives a Park concert at 8 PM with a program including March Free Delwing Overature Under the Pines Waltz Roanoke Rapids Fantasia Court of Honor and more. The public is invited to attend.
In Roanoke Rapids on Friday September 2 a community group hosted a reception at the Central School for the Roanoke Rapids and Rosemary school teachers. Attendees included Supt Coltrane and County Supt Akers with the faculty. A musical program followed in the auditorium. Saturday featured a barbecue at Gaston’s Ferry near Thelma hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Wm Horner with fishing and games enjoyed by the crowd.
Last Saturday was designated Get Ready Day for the opening of the long term schools by school authorities to improve cleanliness and happiness in the school home. Reports show marvelous changes in building grounds sanitation due to united action by teachers comitteenmen patrons and school children. Each school aimed to make the day count for the community with strong results from unified efforts.
Promptly at 8 30 the new and modern building opened under favorable circumstances. Parents and patrons filled the room to show appreciation and pledge cooperation. Teachers present included Miss Ruby Sisk principal for 7 8th grades, Neta Andrews 5 6th, Mamie Leeper 3 4th, Murrell Patterson 1 2nd.
The ladies of the Presbyterian Church invite all to a reception at Mrs. Fred Peck's home Friday evening Sept. 1 1926 from 6 to 6 30. The same night Mrs. Wharton and Miss McVade of Raleigh will give an organ recital at the church.
The Baptist Church led by Pastor T. S. Crutchfield posts Sunday School at 9:45 with Supt Hancock and a 11:00 morning service. Evening worship at 8:30 with by 7:15 P M youth program. Other groups include Miss Rose Moody group leader and Men's Bible Class Tuesday at 8:00. Christian Endeavor Friday and prayer meeting Wednesday at 8:00 P M.
A community event titled Fat Man Run features teams the Fats and the Leans in a charity baseball game at Rosemary Ball Park at 3:30 PM. Notables include Gay and "Chief Dobbin" with 25 cents admission, under-12s half price, proceeds aiding All Saints Church building fund. Rosemary Band will provide period music.
Announcement cards report the marriage in Yarmouth Maine of Miss Alice Campbell sister of Mrs D L Leslie who has spent summers here. The groom Homer Humphrey has served on the faculty of the New England Conservatory of Music for fourteen years.
The Ladies Aid Society of the First Methodist Church hosted a Monday evening shower for Rev and Mrs Eugene C Few. A large crowd attended and the couple received many useful gifts and tokens of appreciation.
As October nears the active enforcement date for the state Sanitary privy law many towns and villages move to adopt a model ordinance provided by the State Board of Health. Leaders in High Point Smithfield Goldsboro Kenly Clayton and Fuquay Springs report progress and expect hundreds more to follow by October first. The move aims to ensure economy and efficiency through a systematic town action plan.
An ice cream supper is planned at the River Road School Building on Friday evening. Proceeds benefit the school and community events.
