Halifax Pa newspaper notes the pulp mill will begin operations at about noon on September 11 after flood repairs. Most of the workforce is now employed in pulp production and rebuilding around the plants. Water shortages affect supply, an auxiliary river pump provides raw water, and finishing facilities may take two to three weeks to resume production.
Halifax County patrolmen Rothrock Ewe 11 Hines and Long joined 25 other officers to quell a 1500 strong Negro riot in Elizabeth City after a theater fired a Black manager and hired a white replacement. A patrolman suffered a cut elbow from a bottle while leaders were arrested.
The Roanoke Rapids Hospital reports three newborns this past week. A boy born September 8 to Mr and Mrs Carl Allen. A girl born September 11 to Mr and Mrs Grover Daniel. A boy born September 12 to Mr and Mrs Henry Druitt.
A Roanoke Rapids Country Club match will be staged Saturday between Reds captained by Howard Pruden and Blues led by Allen Pierce. About 30 members are expected to participate with Ed Riccoboni in charge as pro. The club is expanding facilities and plans a formal opening soon. Jimmie Moore will manage the golf shop and activities.
Noah Blanton, injured after a fall from the second floor at Rosemary Manufacturing Company, is listed in fair condition. Doctors report a three day fever, deemed a natural reaction rather than infection, as he recovers under medical care.
The local National Guard company shifts to Simmons Park for ten days as mobilization orders arrive for Camp Jackson. Strength grows to about 66 with two officers, possibly 103 with four after camp. Fifteen resignations and twelve new enlistments fill vacancies. new men listed. Armory plans advance with WPA funding, county to pay 35.5 percent of material and labor, total cost just over 69000 dollars.
