Roanoke Rapids area items note visitors to the high school building should be limited to eight to twelve in the afternoon. A later section lists local residents and guests traveling to and from nearby towns for visits and business.
Recorder A L Clark was away on vacation and the local court reported no cases disposed of. Clark returned Tuesday to resume duties and normal proceedings were expected to continue.
Mr. Robert Merritt returns from a week in Norfolk Virginia. Ruth Glover hosts a July lawn party with games ice cream cake and fruit. Attendees include Helen Powell Nellie Williams Birdsong Bell Peele Cobb Hudson Glover and several others. Other residents visit Chapel Hill Suffolk Franklin and Roanoke Rapids with church and community events noted. A death of Mr Cook is reported along with welcomes to new teachers and visits among families including Parsons, Crawford, and Glover households.
The start of the term is postponed one week due to heavy preliminary work and an unfinished building. On Monday September 19 at nine, Roanoke Rapids and Patterson Town north side students enter the old Central Building for grades one to four, Rosemary and Patterson Town south side students enter Rosemary School for grades one and two, while others attend the New High School Building.
About 300 children will enter school this year for the first time. Beginners should enroll next Thursday, September 15, at 9 a.m. Report to Miss Hearne at Central School for those attending Central, to Miss Weaver at Rosemary School for Rosemary, and to the Superintendent in the new building for all other new enrollees.
Miss Anna Holtz Freeman and Miss Corrine Marks, separated twins adopted by different families, met again after a chance discovery. Orphaned at one, they were raised apart until a relative noted their likeness. Freeman travels to Lumberton with Marks for a brief visit before returning home.
A series of revival and evangelistic services will start Monday night September 19 at Roanoke Rapids Baptist Church. Ray A. V. Joyner of Wilton North Carolina will assist in these services.
In Roanoke Avenue Meeker Colorado readers are invited to All Saints Episcopal Church where Rev. Lewis N. Taylor and parish worker Mrs. Katherine Webster oversee services and activities. The Sixteenth Sunday after Trinity is observed with Holy Communion at 7:30, church school at 9:45, morning service at 11, and night service at 7:45. Various groups meet weekly including C W Club, choir, and Brotherhood of St. Andrew.
Great revival begins on Sunday morning September 11 at Rosemary Church of Christ with the theme The Gospel in song and in story. Dr J Taylor of Lexington Kentucky will conduct each evening preaching powerfully the word of God. Music starts 7 45 each evening. The Presbyterian Church led by Rev. Stanley White holds Sunday services at 11:00 A M with morning worship at 10:00 A M and an evening service at 7 45 P M. Christian Endeavor meets at 3 00 P M with a 7 00 P M program and a 3 00 P M prayer meeting on Wednesdays. The sermon in the morning is titled Living for Profit and seventeen Endeavor girls perform We Never Knew as a missionary drama at the evening service. The pastor commences a series on early church history with Political and Material Conditions of the World at Christ's Advent.
Miss Elizabeth Pulliam returns to Richmond from two weeks with friends in Henrico and Norfolk. Visitors include Miss Olivia Vincent from Norfolk visiting her mother Mrs Ida Vincent. Local youths picnic at Point Rock for Miss Lottie Grant. Rev Wm Towe held a large Oak Grove service. Families travel to Norfolk for a fair and to Seaboard for a burial. Mrs J Davis and daughter Lottie head home to Newbern. Florie Vincent stays with W A Vincent as parents are away. Health officer Dr C P Parker administers typhoid vaccine at Vulture School with plans for a second dose. Mrs Alice Walker visiting brother J Squire.
Loyal Order of Moose No 1584 held a social at their rooms over the bottling works. A large turnout enjoyed music by local banjo and violin artists. Rev Lewis N Taylor spoke on Purity Aid and Progress as refreshments were served. The lodge plans growth.
A special call from the Superintendent urges all parents of Junior and Senior High School students to attend a meeting next Friday evening, September 16, in the Central School Auditorium. All high school teachers will be present to discuss problems needing a solution and to reach a definite understanding between teachers and parents.
Roanoke Mills community hosts a night school opening this evening in the Central School Auditorium. Activities include music by the Roanoke Rapids Band, community singing, and several short speeches. Miss Ross directs with assistant Miss Nelle Shant.
Rosemary Junior-Senior High School calls for pupil conferences on September 12 and 13 to plan studies. Seventh graders gather Monday morning, eighth Monday afternoon, ninth Tuesday morning, and tenth and eleventh Tuesday afternoon to select subjects and receive book lists.
A Board of School Trustees meeting approved a resolution barring entry for children who have not reached six before December 1. Those turning six after December 1 may enroll at the January start of the second half, enabling semi annual entry and promotion. The policy aligns with the best educational practice in the country.
J W Smoot contractor erecting two brick stores between W F Joyner Motor Co and L G Shell Co for B D Rabil of Rocky Mount. Each shop measures fifty by eighty feet with attractive fronts. One will house furniture and the other dry goods. The second floor will be turned into a hall for a façade users.
