Seventeen men at Camp Jackson in Columbia South Carolina are set to join colors on September 19 as forty per cent of the first quota are to depart on October 3. An additional 200 men were called yesterday for examination on Wednesday September 12 as the first quota remains uncompleted.
Halifax County voters face a heavy exemption backlog as the Board delays the first quota of 331 men. By September 12 only 262 were certified to Goldsboro, leaving 69 awaiting exemption rulings and 200 examined. Next calls: 40 percent on September 19 and 40 percent on October 3, with 5 percent already called on September 6. Many individuals and towns listed, plus trips by Prof. and Mrs. Proctor to Washington and other locals taking pleasure trips or tours.
Roanoke Rapids notes visitors and residents with dozens of short items. John Sale of U S 8, Texas, spent days here with father R C Sale. Miss Sallye Williams of South Boston on business. Several locals travel to Norfolk Richmond Baltimore Kingston for supplies and visits. Mary Daughtry returns from Norfolk. Miss Sarah Daughtry from Richmond. Families including Williams, Marks, Robertson, Cook, Myrick, Grimmer, Jackson, Hudson, House, Wicker, Brock, Taylor, Mills, Witts, Rogerson, Harden, Chase, Welch and others are recorded visiting, shopping or returning from trips to Baltimore, Richmond, Norfolk, Kingston, Victoria and Havana.
At a board meeting the town of Roanoke Rapids elected C. G. Hamlet as Chief of Police succeeding J. R. Baird who resigned to become Tax Collector of Roanoke Rapids Township. The retiring chief received a thanks for eight years of service and Hamlet vows a vigilant administration.
The concert class of the Odd fellow's Orphanage in Goldsboro North Carolina presented Princess Chrysanthemum a Japanese operetta on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at the Peoples and Rosemary Theatres. Both shows were well attended and enjoyed as the children performed their parts in a pleasing manner.
The Vanguard of Democracy lists seventeen men from Halifax County as the first quota for the National Army. They reported Tuesday at Halifax and left Wednesday for Camp Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina, to begin training. The community offers heartfelt good wishes for luck, God speed, and a safe return.
William Jenkins a colored man faced Recorder Saunders after a heated altercation with a husky friend near Tilery's store. He threatened to resort to his artillery. He hid his pistol under a wagon, bond set at 100 dollars, and his address listed as Halifax county jail.
The Red Cross Society thanks the Can p Fire Girls for their Tag day work and the public for support. The girls sold $30.00 worth of tags. The list includes Paul Matthews P H Rose Ed Allsbrook Lucey Clements Rosa Heath Long Effie Keeter Mrs B R Weeks and many others. Also C A Wyche and family attended a wedding in South Boston Monday. Job Taylor is in Florida this week on business.
Laura May Shell two year old daughter of Willis H Shell drowned after falling head first into a six inch deep wash tub. Her nine year old brother pulled her out but she choked and died minutes after the father arrived. Interment was at Smith's Church Cemetery on Tuesday. Community expresses sympathy to the bereaved parents.
Miss Margaret Cabell Stokes married John Henry Harrison Jr at Blackstone Presbyterian Church in an elegant ceremony. The bride wore a duchess satin gown with a Juliette cap and veil, carrying a rose and lily bouquet. Guests from North Carolina and Virginia attended as music included Lohengrin and Mendelssohn. The couple planned a wedding tour before settling in Rosemary, North Carolina.
Thousands of boys flood camps to join the big national army. The Herald promises complete weekly coverage with a strong staff of writers and photographers to keep readers in intimate touch with the preparatory stories and pictures from local recruits.
Roanoke Rapids and Rosemary soldiers in Company H Warrenton received comfort bags from local ladies as they prepared to depart for Greenville South Carolina. Mr W F Horner and Mesdames W P Taylor W S Hancock and D L Leslie delivered the bags. The soldiers thanked the community and listed their names from Rosemary and Roanoke Rapids.
