City Jail Criticism Questioned by Roanoke Rapids Chief

Roanoke Rapids Police Chief H. E. Dobbins issued a statement defending the city jail after criticisms by a grand jury committee. He notes annual inspections by county state and federal inspectors and describes cleaning routines and the presence of service members and officials at the jail each weekend.

Troop 6 presented the radio play Wanted A Volunteer on WCBI last week. Federation of Demonstration Clubs in Session

A meeting of the Federation of Home Demonstration Clubs was held today in the Halifax school auditorium at 10 30. Mrs Harriet Pressley of Raleigh spoke on Fifteen and Fifty and the afternoon highlighted Halifax County 4-H Club girls and the work of Home Demonstration Clubs. Hollister Brinkleyville and Airlie were hostesses for the event.

Dobbins Returns Home From Overseas Duty

Corp. Dobbins is back home after overseas service since July 1945. David Dobbins son of Chief and Mrs H B Dobbins served in New Guinea Manila and Korea and expects his discharge in December.

Banks to Close City Observes Armistice Day

City banks will be closed next Monday in observance of Armistice Day. The post office will be closed except for one hour from 11 to 12.

Fireworks Violations Warned Within City Limits

Chief H B Dobbins warned against discharging fireworks inside the city limits at 18 and said violators will be bailed into Mayor's Court. He cited dangers to children and the risk of fires and urged parental cooperation to safeguard the public.

Roanoke Rapids Price Control Board Closed Last Monday

The Roanoke Rapids price control board serving Halifax and Northampton counties closed last Monday marking the end of nearly five years of volunteer service to curb inflation and distribute scarce goods. The district OPA will handle remaining functions with Raleigh as the new hub for inquiries transfers and sugar rationing forms.

Coggins Held on Check Fraud Charge in Mayor’s Court

Harold Coggins, a Negro, was ordered jailed on $300 bond for trial in Roanoke Rapids Recorder’s Court after admitting he wrote the name George H. Winfield on a check and cashed it at Collins-Jones Company. Virginia Edwards, a Negro woman, was charged with stealing the $41.40 check but was acquitted.

Exchange Club Dance to Benefit Local High School Band

The Roanoke Rapids Exchange Club sponsors a dance next Tuesday night from 9 to 1 in the Armory. Roy Cole and his UNC campus band with George Demas as vocalist provide the music. Proceeds fund uniforms for the local high school band.

Public Health X Ray Survey Committee Maps Final Plan

The Tu berculosis X Ray Survey Working Committee met in the Municipal Building to outline final plans with wide civic participation. William D. Norman heads the Weldon program and Mrs. Margaret Parshall leads Halifax County education efforts, while Station WCBT pledges radio time and Frank Thomas of the Herald backs community publicity.
