The VFW and its auxiliary will sell red poppies Saturday on streets and in stores. Proceeds aid WWI and WWII veterans and their families, funding emergency relief, rehabilitation, burial costs, and service programs.
Bronze Star Medal awarded to Samuel T. Lyles a service company truck driver who hauled supplies to front line units. He parked his truck amid fierce Gambsheim fighting in France and joined a defending platoon until ordered to withdraw. He also wears the European theater medal with two battle stars the Infantry Badge and Good Conduct Medal.
Seaman 1/c Leamon Oliver son of Mr and Mrs T F Oliver of 133 Jefferson Street has arrived in Seattle after 14 months overseas with the Navy. He graduated from joke Rapids High School and entered the Navy in November. In Buckner Bay Okinawa he earned a unit citation for rescue work during a tornado. He expects discharge and return home in June.
Captain Herman Murrell Hudson Jr has returned home from the Asiatic Pacific Theatre of Operations. He spent the last 12 months stationed on Okinawa and served with the 10th Army before handling Ordinance equipment for the 27th and 96th divisions prior to movement to Japan. He was later assigned to the Army of Occupation.
Walter Barger and student ministerial colleagues from the University of Richmond preached at the Baptist Church in the pastor’s absence. Rev Gordon L. Price attended the Southern Baptist Convention in Miami, leaving Barger to lead both the morning and evening services.
At a city playgrounds committee meeting in Roanoke Rapids High School offices, Coach J C Hoyle was offered and accepted the directorship of the playgrounds for the year. He plans a robust recreation program assisted by Coach Rock Venters and local volunteers. Playgrounds open June 10 for ten weeks with the Rosemary pool to be free again.
A series of evangelistic services will start Monday evening at 7 30 at the local Pentecostal Holiness Church and continue through June 9. Rev Joe E Campbell of Columbia 8 C will preach.
Dr John W Martin Halifax County Democratic Executive Committee chairman says registration from 1935 remains valid if the registrant remained a county citizen. The Saturday May 25 primary for state and county officers is expected to attract a large vote.
James E. Howell, a young white man, posted $300 bond to appear June 20 in Roanoke Rapids Recorder's Court on charges of assaulting Policeman Massey and interfering with an officer. Massey suffered a broken nose and glasses in the incident.
Private Cecil R. Smith died after a fellow soldier shot him. Roanoke Rapids launches an Emergency Food Collection Monday with drives led by J Reece Welch and a team including Rev Peter M Denges and Rev W R Stevens. All contributions fund food purchases. workers donate services. Partner statements from Hoover and Truman cited on hunger and peace.
William Whitby son of Mr and Mrs William R Whitby of Roanoke Rapids has been assigned to the USS Vulcan. He enlisted February 2 1946 and trained at Norfolk Naval Training Center.
May 20 1946 Roanoke Rapids Mayor Kelly Jenkins calls all citizens and groups to cooperate in an emergency food collection. The effort funds canned goods and cash for overseas free distribution to starving people amid postwar hunger and drought crises.
Pfc. Norman Garner son of Mr and Mrs J T Garner has arrived back home after honorably discharged from the Marine Corps He was stationed in Japan during his service news notes his overseas assignment and discharge location.
Alfred H. Dixon 17 seaman second class son of Mr and Mrs Willie T Dixon 404 Monroe St Roanoke Rapids assigned to the USS Missouri. Dixon entered the Navy on February 25 1946 and received his recruit training.
T Sgt William C Graham is on a 30 day furlough with his parents at 832 Roanoke Avenue after returning from overseas duty in China with the Marine Corps. He will depart for California in June to receive discharge after four years of service.
