Hodges boy car victim marked second family death in six months

Frederick Hodges nine year old son of Mr and Mrs R C Hodges near Vulture in Northampton County was killed by an automobile last Sunday evening. The driver Joseph Lester Cumbie 19 was released on a $500 bond. A coroner’s inquest was scheduled for Friday at Gaston and funeral services were held at the Hodges home with interment in the family burying ground. The Hodges family has already suffered a fatality when Herbert Hodges 17 died from injuries in an accident on November 22.

Negro Improves in Hospital After Shooting

Herbert Johnson a Negro shot and seriously wounded by Chief H E Dobbins last Friday morning May 9 is reported improving at the hospital. He was shot while attempting to escape after being identified as the man who assaulted Alta Mae Hatfield near the Junction on May 4. A warrant charges him with assault with intent to commit rape. The shooting occurred near Tilghman’s Cross Roads after the prisoner was taken to Mitchell’s Sawmill for identification.

Banks Close for Mecklenburg Day Celebration

All banks in the city will be closed Tuesday May 20 to observe Mecklenburg Day recognizing the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence dated May 20 1775 in this state.
