Roanoke Rapids readiness for Coastal Plain League debut with The Jays nickname and 13 spring tryouts underway. Manager Martin seeks talent in Florida as directors plan a large opening day celebration against Rocky Mount on April 24.
Roanoke Rapids fire chief Co B Camp won a $25 prize for the best nickname for the local baseball team The Jays his entry honored the Roanoke Rapids Jaycees with the earliest postmark and the team will wear uniforms bearing a large J. In Gaston a shooting at Vance Beards store left Eddie Gibson with a chest wound and Louis Gibson with a broken arm both in hospital and tied to the store owner Beards warrants issued for all three men.
A special investigating committee found that County Commissioner G. H. Johnson may have technically but unintentionally violated the law during his 40 month tenure as temporary head of the county ABC system. The panel recommended recording about $5,000 in pay and per diem as payment for services rendered, noting the issue arose from his concurrent roles with the County Board. Johnson served from June 1943 to February of this year.
Ill cast members Sherrod Crumpler Don Tillar and Henry Akers are unable to perform in the Kiwanis Club minstrel at the High School auditorium tonight and Friday. Substitutions have been made by director Pat Gorman, and the show must go on.
Only two days remain to file state and federal income tax returns. George C. Green Jr. state deputy tax collector will be in the municipal building court room through next Saturday to assist in filing state returns.
The Roanoke Rapids police department is at full strength for the first time in years with a chief and ten officers. The newest officer is Carl Benton a former Raleigh detective sergeant who started last night. Benton is married and has two children.
Roanoke Rapids schools will remain open as the flu epidemic is not yet serious, says Superintendent I. E. Ready. Attendance runs about 85 percent in elementary and 82 percent in the high school, with several teachers absent.
Halifax County law officers met Wednesday night in Roanoke Rapids Municipal Building and formed the Halifax County Police Association to foster closer cooperation, aid crime detection and prevention, exchange information, and uphold high law enforcement standards with about 80 officers in attendance.
