Randall White Missing in Action Over France Since June 14
Randall White 23, son of Mr and Mrs H E White of this city, is reported missing in action over France since June 14. A War Department telegram confirmed the loss, noting White served in the Army Air Corps since 1940 and flew over 30 bombing missions. He graduated Roanoke Rapids High School and attended High Point College. He has been decorated with two meritorious service medals. The last letter from him arrived last week, written before the Normandy invasion. He has not been home in over a year.

Roanoke Rapids Becomes Fifth First Class Post Office
The Roanoke Rapids Postoffice is now a first class office, the fifth in the Second Congressional district and 39th in the state. Postmaster L G Shell cites a $30 786 30 nine year postal receipts rise and the Rosemary consolidation that created the current Roanoke Rapids office. Local WAC Sergeant Receives Good Conduct Ribbon
Sergeant Margaret E. Butler, daughter of Mr and Mrs S W Butler of 127 Jefferson Street, was awarded the Good Conduct ribbon at Topeka Army Air Field. She serves with the WAC detachment there as a clerk typist and novice photographer in the field photo lab.

Dr Nathan Fitts Receives Purple Heart Bar
Dr Nathan Fitts of Heavan Rapids receives the Purple Heart Bar for wounds while serving on the Liberty ship SS Richard Olney in the Med during shuttle runs to Salerno. The vessel was attacked by a German plane and torpedoed, with about 400 soldiers rescued after it beached. three crewmen died and about 30 were injured.

Guard Camp at Fort Bragg Postponed in 1944
The Roanoke Rapids unit of the North Carolina State Guard will not attend the Fort Bragg encampment scheduled for July 6 through 16, 1944. Postponement follows medical advisories from state and Fort Bragg officials over infantile paralysis in parts of the state. Capt. F. S. Kemp was informed by telegram from Adjt. Gen. J. Van Metts. A later summer or early fall date is expected.

Three Alarms Sounded As City Fires Reported
Three fire alarms were sounded this week by the department for an automobile fire in front of J C Penny Company a burning motor in a frigid fire and a grass fire None of the incidents caused damage to property or injuries to people.

Missing in Action Captain Writes Home Stating He Is Safe
After being reported missing in action on June 5 Captain George W. Taylor sent a letter to his wife Louise Armstrong Taylor confirming he is well and safe. Drafted in 1942, he trained at Keesler Field Tyndall Field Carny and earned his wings in Florida in 1943 and is credited with wiping out a machine gun nest and killing 12 Germans. The couple’s address appears as Roanoke Rapids with Mrs. Taylor formerly of Branchville.
