Roanoke Rapids Soldiers Reach Foreign Soil
Two local youths land safely overseas with American troops. James W. Vaughan, former Herald employee and son of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Vaughan, arrived at an unannounced Atlantic port and is now in care of the New York Postmaster. He enlisted October 6, 1941, trained at Fort Knox in the Armored Force. Frank Burrell of Roanoke Rapids, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Burrell, is among Roanoke Rapids soldiers in Australia, inducted spring 1940 with Company B 105th Medical Regiment. his parents report he is well and enjoying the climate.

Halifax County USO drive starts Monday for Victory Day
Under Governor Broughton’s authorization July 4 is Victory Day in North Carolina. Halifax Civilian Defense Council Chairman A Leonidas Hux says a Halifax courthouse mass meeting will feature a prominent speaker. A statewide broadcast between 1 and 2 pm will be heard in Halifax with details to follow in next week’s Herald.

Lions Elect New Officers in Local Club Installation
Carl Thompson was installed as President of the local Lions Club at the regular meeting held last Thursday night in the First Baptist church social rooms. Other officers installed were Thomas L. Martin as first vice president Tommie Adams as second vice president L B Brown as third vice president Harvey Woodruff as secretary Steve Roberson as treasurer Rev Edmund Berkley as tail twister and Dot Bennett as Lion tamer. Thompson succeeds O Griffin as President.

Robbins Youth Reported Missing in Action
Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Robbins of 85 Jackson Street fear for their son as letters from him were returned marked Service Discontinued. Robbins served in the U S Army in the Philippine Islands and was said to be at Manila Bay early this year, with grave anxiety over his fate.
Ration Board Sets Dates For Applications
H. B. Speight chairman of the local rationing board announced new dates and hours for filing applications. Sugar applications accepted Monday and Tuesday 9 AM to 4 PM and Wednesday 9 AM to 12 PM. Gasoline filings on Thursday 9 AM to 4 PM. Tires and tubes accepted Friday 9 AM to 4 PM and Saturday 9 AM to 12 PM.
