The Roanoke Rapids Herald reports the first Extra printed for the election night. Only 500 copies were sold as newsboys yelled Extra All About the Election. A 2,324 vote total set a county record with no injuries.
Petitions circulated to the U S Post Office Department seek consolidating Roanoke Rapids and Rosemary post offices. A special inspector will investigate and plan a single Roanoke Rapids N C office with delivery to every home and business within city limits twice daily.
The home of J. T. Chase, Virginia Electric & Power Co. manager, burned Monday afternoon with most contents destroyed by fire or water. Loss includes 1500 books, a valued stamp collection, clothing, papers, and a safe. reconstruction to take about three months due to extensive damage.
The Rosemary Manufacturing Co pool opens this week for public use through the summer. A Red Cross life saver will monitor pool use, and a small fee covers expenses. Season tickets cost fifty cents for adults and twenty five cents for children. Regular hours are unchanged.
Roanoke Rapids All-Stars edged the Orioles of Norfolk 3 to 2. Finch pitched well amid wildness, Birdsong starred at third, and Key Johnson and Bernard Edmondson delivered the decisive eighth ninth inning rally. Manager Clyde Liske says Graham, North Carolina will visit Simmons Park this Saturday at 3:00 PM.

Eight and six year old Marjorie and Jack Hazlewood, children of Mr and Mrs H P Hazlewood, left the Whitakera area early Monday morning to walk home to Roanoke Rapids thirty miles away. A kind neighbor found them about five miles from the farm and returned them to anxious grandparents as their mother recoveries from an appendectomy. Their father then drove to Edgecombe to bring them back home. The family hopes for a speedy reunion.
Six young athletes from Suffolk convene for a final gym workout as they prep for Friday night bouts against Roanoke Rapids challengers. Notables include Spud Wade, Turk Nelms, Kid Bryant, Bill Benton, Juddy Johnson, and Battling Shaw, with prelims and main events slated across local venues.
Democratic voters of Roanoke Rapids will hold a mass meeting early next week to nominate a ticket for mayor and commissioners. The election is set for Tuesday July 7 with a mayor and six commissioners to be chosen, three from each ward.
The city of Roanoke Rapids North Carolina extended from the canal to the creek after a decisive vote. A total of 2824 voters went to the polls Tuesday with 2206 in favor and 118 against extending the city limits. Precincts reported large majorities for extension and active canvassing by supporters. The vote was certified by the Board of Elections and the new city began forming at noon yesterday with extensive turnout and organization.
