In a full community registration drive, over seven hundred residents signed up with modest uneventful proceedings. Women greeted registrants with decorations while expressions of patriotism filled the gathering, and some whiskey buyers faced social embarrassment during the event.
The community saw a quiet yet crowded registration for America's manhood with Roanoke Rapids totaling 846 and Rosemary 356. Civically decorated booths, civic league volunteers, and a cheeky note on twenty-one year olds with whiskey shipments marked the day as officials projected 44 and 43 men to join the first 625,000.
P A Shell Fenner and J C Smith were arraigned before Recorder Wm Saunders on affray charges after witnesses described a street altercation. Shell and Fenner Smith were fined one dollar each plus half the costs. J C Smith was dismissed. The dispute arose over salted dough placed in a garden by Shell, which killed some of Smiths chickens.
Unclaimed mail will be held fifteen days at Rosemary Post Office before forwarding to the Dead Letters division in Washington DC. Names on the list include Miss Mertle Andrews, Mrs Bettie Curtis, Geo, James R. Medii, Miss Annie Greens, Mr V Mi fatson, Mrs Mollie Browning, Miss Fannie Edwards, Meatrice Jenkins, Mary B. Owens, Vess Scott, Annie Cook, Carry Freeman, H. G. Lightner, Steward Riggans, Kate Upchurch. When calling please mention advertised.
The Halifax County Red Cross organizes a county chapter with branches and auxiliaries. Membership costs one dollar to one hundred dollars, no service obligation, and members wear a red cross button for 25 cents. County and town organizers are listed with contact points for circulars.
Mr D W Kellogg, longtime local figure and Assistant Secretary of the Building & Loan, has been notified by the War Department of enlistment acceptance. He will report to Raleigh for duty with the Army Recruiting Staff and depart soon, leaving behind many friends who describe his years of community service.
The marriage of Percy J. Mattox of Adams Grove Virginia to Lucy May Harrell of Grizzards Virginia occurred Sunday afternoon June 3 at the Roanoke Rapids hotel. Rev E C Few of the Methodist Church officiated.

Roanoke Rapids Rosemary and Patterson Town residents are urged to attend a Red Cross meeting at the Mayor's Office on Saturday June 10 at four o'clock. The event seeks volunteers to support wartime relief and national service through the organization.
Base ball news notes the Roanoke Valley League forms, with Harp er praised for fielding and hitting prospects. Dr. T. W. M. Long is President, Wm. L. Manning Secretary and Treasurer. Captains are W. H. Harrison of Roanoke Rapids Lieutenant Dunn of The Soldier Boys J. Y. Hinson of Rosemary and J. W. Hodges of Patterson Mill. Admission 10 cents for ladies and 25 cents for men. Season schedule deferred to a future issue.
The June 5 election for Roanoke Rapids Graded Schools District to issue bonds up to 75000 and levy taxes up to 4 per hundred carried by 842 for and 301 against. Voter turnout reached 510 with strong mill shuttle service to polls. Tax rate set at 40 cents. board now authorized to issue 345000 in bonds and fund next year’s needs.
R M Sanders returned from Henderson after a visit to relatives and friends. C P Johnson, after visiting his Tarboro parents, returned. Rev Nat Harrison spent Sunday in Brinkleyville with friends. J H Williams and W R Williams with families visited Tarboro and Rev A G Carter, soon to assume Rosemary Baptist Church pastorate. A welcome meeting is planned Friday at 8 pm. M Gulbranson returned from Wilmington. H M Johnson sees Tarboro relatives. Carl White and T G Busa visited Greensboro. Mr and Mrs G M Gurley traveled to Rockingham. Mrs Gurley continues to Union 5 C to visit relatives, with Gurley back Wednesday. W T Clark of Aurelian Springs visited Monday.

Halifax County Red Cross reports start of National Military Relief Fund contributions across the county. Co K 2nd Rex N C National Guards at Weldon led by baseball team with a $20 donation from Roanoke Rapids league games. Four team league to donate one tenth of receipts plus Co K proceeds to fund. aim to send $1,000 to Washington National Headquarters.

A L Clark reappointed city clerk and J R Baird chief of police with Dr T W M Long as health officer. Ordinance revision postponed to a special meeting. Winding up sidewalk work and reports by City Engineer and Town Clerk to compute costs and property shares.
Churches announce Sunday School every Sunday at 9 45 A M in Roanoke Ave corner Ninth St. Preaching next Sunday by the pastor at 11 00 A M.
Methodist Church announces Sunday School at 9 45 with W W Woodruff superintendent. Preaching at LA M and 730 PM. Evening meeting Wednesday at 730 PM led by Pastor Eugene C Few.
Rosemary Methodist Church announces Sunday School at 10:00 led by Supt J. B. Boyd. Pastor Rev A H Andrews. Services on the first and third Sundays at 7:30 PM and on ALTA. M. and every Sunday at 7:30 PM. Prayer service Wednesday at 7:30 PM with choir practice Thursday evening.
The Baptist church invites the public to weekly services with Pastor Rev C H Trueblood. Sunday School starts at 11 00 AM and 7 30 PM services. Wednesday prayer meeting at 7 80 PM. Junior choir and Sunbeam Band meet on the second Saturday at 2 30 PM.
