A Moore General Hospital team of three wounded veterans will visit Roanoke Rapids for four days during Textile War Week to stress textiles’ role in the war effort. Colonel J Tracy Hale will speak, with Lt T J Barzil in charge of the visiting group.

Pfc. John Wayne Thomas, 21, son of Mr and Mrs Davis Franklin of 1005 Cedar St Roanoke Rapids, was killed in action in Germany July 4 1944 per War Department telegram. He had been reported missing earlier and served in the Marine Corps after Roanoke Rapids High School. A brother Pfc Edward Thomas is also in service.

Private Leslie Glenn Garner age 25 of Newport North Carolina was killed in action on Luzon Island Philippines on May 12 1945. He enlisted in September 1944 and shipped overseas February 1945. He is survived by his wife Estelle Edwards Garner Halifax County home demon gece agent mother two siblings and a Navy brother. Wife edits The Home Sphere and is visiting her mother in Newport.

Cooke Is Out On 89 Points From Fort Bragg
Pvt. Louie Davis Cooke, son of Mr and Mrs Thomas H Cooke of Jackson Street, arrived Sunday from Fort Bragg with a medical discharge after service since 1941. He earned 89 points and served in the Pacific, Pre Pearl Harbor and American Theatres. He came home for furlough in fall 1944 and has been in Arizona since. He was a cook in the air corps and wished it was good to be home for keeps.

Playgrounds Open Monday In Roanoke Rapids Area
Playgrounds in Roanoke Rapids are set to open next Monday under the supervision of Rockefeller Centers linked to the local high school athletic department. Jewelry Shipment Recovered After Year and a Half
A Roanoke Rapids postal inspection uncovers 60 loose diamonds 45 jewelry pieces and a solid gold watch from a Lynches Jewelry Store package addressed to Kimberly Diamond Works Atlanta. A Seaboard mail handler was arrested and convicted for stealing the parcel, which had vanished 18 months earlier.

Butts Injured While Unloading Mail near Halifax
J. G. Butts mail messenger for Halifax was injured last Thursday May 31 while unloading mail from Atlantic Coast Line train No. 89. He was hit when a freight train passed and a timber fragment struck his right arm breaking it above the wrist. He was treated at the Atlantic Coast Line Hospital in Rocky Mount and returned home the same night.
