J W Saunders denied challenging the teachers vote, clarifying it was not Jay Sanders. The water tower on J C Smith property was removed as a new two story business building rises. A special radio program honoring Roanoke Rapids will air on WBT Charlotte featuring Fisher Hendley and the Carolina Tar Heels sponsored by Crazy Water Crystals via Taylors Drug Store. Arthur H House of Weldon, a U S Naval Academy graduate, will join the Mississippi on June 30 for summer operations. Roanoke Avenue storm sewers near completion as paving proceeds.

Precinct Meeting Saturday in Halifax County

Democratic voters are urged to attend Saturday June 9 at 2 PM to elect a precinct committee of five and delegates to the County Convention to be held Monday June 11 at Halifax. Each precinct gets one delegate per 25 votes cast in the gubernatorial election. Commissioners to Hear Complaints on Tax Valuation

The Board of County Commissioners will meet as a board of equalization at Halifax Court House on June 18 to hear complaints about property tax valuations. The annual session follows section 523, chapter 204, Public Laws 1933, allowing action only on the third Monday in June.

Roanoke Rapids High School Holds 34 Class Exercises

The Roanoke Rapids Commencement Exercises ended with graduation night on Thursday June 7. Diplomas were awarded to 62 seniors. The Baccalaureate Sermon was delivered by Rev. John William Smith of Centenary Methodist Episcopal Church Richmond to a capacity audience. Class Day Exercises followed.

Halifax County Voters Set Record in Sixteen-County Election

Halifax County voters turned out 8 487 strong to cast the largest county vote on record last Saturday June 2. Julian Allsbrook won the State Senate race by 665 votes over T W M Long and Leonidas Hux led Quentin Gregory for Clerk of the Superior Court by 1 223. Thorne and Leggett won seats in the House. five city commissioners were elected. Kerr defeated Dickens for Congress and Winborne defeated Macon. Cooper won the sheriff’s coroner race with 12 votes for Cashwell solo entry.
