Funeral mixup ends with living WWI veteran still alive

Charlie Moore, a World War I veteran at a CCC camp in Littleton, was mistakenly declared dead and funeral rites planned in Pittsboro. A telegram to his brother Joe sparked a funeral, firing squad, and grave digging before a check revealed the deceased was a Black man with the same name. The error traced to a white Moore family lineage and a case of mistaken identity. Charlie Moore later placed wreaths on a fallen friend’s grave.
