City Adverts Bids For Street Job On Aug 9
Notices to contractors to bid on the Roanoke Rapids street improvement project were published and sealed bids will be received by the Mayor and Board of Commissioners at 10 a.m. on August 9 in the Municipal Building. The board approved plans and a wage schedule and set project details including 10 000 feet of storm sewers 52 000 feet of curb and gutter and 90 000 square yards of paving with 219 000 dollars available. The pool stays open to Sept 1 with a 20 dollar city match if Lions and Kiwanis donate jointly. Jimmie Hatem received a beer license for his establishment.

Paul Speed Resigns as Halifax Office Deputy
Paul Speed has resigned as office deputy at Halifax County under Sheriff Riddick. The resignation, effective Saturday, cites desire to devote more time to his store business in Scotland Neck. The Roanoke River surged to a crest of plus 44 feet at Weldon after ten days of rain, forcing shutdowns at Roanoke Mills Co. No. 1 and halting steam dependent operations. Halifax Paper Co. also slowed, lowland farmers prep a second plantings, Caledonia dikes hold but may fail, and Highways 1 and 301 in Virginia were closed as Nottaway and tributaries overflowed.

Lightning Kills 7-Year-Old Fannie Scott in Northampton County
Fannie Scott, seven, daughter of Pete Scott, colored tenant farmer, was struck by lightning and killed instantly at the Buck Turner place near Roanoke Rapids. Her sister received a shock while their mother was only slightly affected. The family home sustained no apparent damage.

Transfusion Fails for Young Boy in Roanoke Rapids
Ten year old Morris Moody died at 8 30 pm at Roanoke Rapids Hospital from gangrene after an infected arm. Firemen gave blood transfusions without success. Orphaned, he was raised by his uncle Lewis Moody of Slates Cross Roads. Funeral at Shiloh Church with burial in the church cemetery. He leaves two brothers George of Emporia Virginia and Anderson of Freeman Virginia and two sisters.

Woman dies after husband hits her
James Davis, 39, of Weldon, is jailed without bond in Halifax County charged with murder after his wife died in a doctor's office. An autopsy may show a skull fracture from a Saturday night blow, with a preliminary hearing set for next Tuesday at Recorder's Court.

Martin Newsom a 35 year old textile worker died at his Roanoke Rapids home shortly after returning from evangelist J M Creech's tent on Madison Street. He reportedly spoke of a headache then collapsed before 11 30 PM. he served as an usher at revival meetings and intervened in a conflict with a man whose wife was being healed. He is survived by his wife Myr.
