Rossette Disease of Wheat Is Compared

United States Department of Agriculture experts compare rosette disease in wheat with injuries from Hessian fly and other pests. Early spring shows dwarfed blue green plants with rosette growth. autumn, rosette is not evident. When both rosette and insect damage occur, distinguishing causes is difficult, especially in late spring. Bulletin 1187 explains the symptoms and is available on request.

Banding Material Used Against Gypsy Moth

The bureau of entomology uses a greasy semi viscous banding material with a tar like odor to control gypsy moths in New England. Developed since 1918 to replace a German product no longer available, it works mainly by the viscous condition hindering caterpillars rather than the odor which slightly restrains them.

Space in San Luis Valley

The San Luis valley forms a remarkable U S valley surrounded by mountains. Spanning 190 miles long and 63 wide, it covers 8 000 square miles and 5 150 000 acres of grazing land. Artesian wells dot the area at 7 000 feet elevation above sea level. Rio Grande traverses the valley once explored by early Spaniards including San Luis named after St Louis.

One Seventh of Slaughtered Hogs Show Tuberculosis

United States Department of Agriculture records for 1922 report that about one hog in every seven slaughtered under federal inspection carried tuberculosis. Of 80,416,489 hogs slaughtered, 5,640,061 showed lesions. The text notes transmission from tuberculous cattle, localized lesions, and over $2,000,000 in pork condemned as unfit for food. By 1928, 24,192 accredited herds in the U S had more than a half million cattle declared free from tuberculosis.

Soy Beans With Corn Do Not Lessen Yield

Ohio Experiment Station findings over three years show soybeans and corn grown together increase total grain per acre versus corn alone. Corn soy bean mixtures yield about 11.2 tons per acre versus 8.2 tons for corn alone, with greater benefits in wet seasons and for hogging down, inoculated soybeans, and mixed forage.

Costs of Using Horses on Corn Belt Farms

The 1921 survey by the U S Department of Agriculture estimates a farm with six work horses on 160 acres has about 80 dollars yearly maintenance per head with feed and bedding 40 percent of cost. Total gross cost about 108 dollars per head, net cost 21 dollars after manure credit.
