Public assistance payments for the fiscal year ending June 30 rose by 627 340 over the previous year. Nathan H Yelton director of the state welfare division said 1940 41 total aid from federal state and local funds was 6416528, up from 5788188 last year. Of the 1940 41 total 476177 went to needy old people over 65, with 37784 receiving checks averaging 10 19 out of 384385 distributed in June. Last year old age payments totaled 4179207. June figures for old age aid are noted.
The report shows age assistance totaling $15,029 to 589 widows of Confederate veterans and June payments to 23,733 dependent children averaging $7.06, with monthly total $167,595. Fiscal year payments reach $1,940,351 for children and $119,564 from the equalization fund. The fund supports old age assistance and aid to dependent children with federal, state, and local sharing.
