Local man faces assault charge in Patterson Mill case

Johnny Walker 38 was bound over to Superior Court on a charge of assault on a female with intent to rape after a preliminary hearing. Miss Maud Rooke, who said she cannot recall events, described being beaten as Walker allegedly entered her home drunk and attacked her in Patterson Mill village.

Roanoke Rapids Council Approves Municipal Building Bonds

At a special session the Roanoke Rapids City Council passed an ordinance authorizing bonds not exceeding 32000 for a municipal building. The project would house the court, tax offices, sanitary district, police and fire departments, and other city facilities.

Roanoke Rapids Birthday Ball to Benefit Georgia Warm Springs

Roanoke Rapids announces a Birthday Ball for the President at the Chockoyette Country Club House on Tuesday January 30 starting at 9 pm. Advance tickets are available through ticket committee members or city drug stores. Proceeds include one dollar per ticket to the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation endowment aiding Infantile Paralysis research and outreach.

Cement bought for Roanoke Rapids ten mile sidewalk plan

A major shipment of 4 000 barrels of Portland cement indicates the Roanoke Rapids sidewalk project may advance despite a new CWA rule restricting hiring to replacements. Local payrolls rose to over 10 400 dollars for 844 workers as foremen were told to cap weekly hours at 24, while questions remain on stone and sand purchases.
