Weldon neighbors praised for help as Fire Department assisted the Travis home fire. Roanoke Rapids truck provided decisive pressure while local lines failed. Talks covered malnutrition causes and effects, food value, and diseases from malnutrition. performances by Mrs. Heath Lee and Miss Irene Gordon. A room prize went to Miss Mable Regan's group for most mothers present. A county suit to recover funds is described, with Gary estate involvement and George C. Green eyeing February court term.
Two Negro teachers from Brick College near Enfield were killed when their car was struck by an extra freight train at a railroad crossing around 7 p m Friday. Coroner Williams reconstructed the scene: the Whippet sedan passed the southbound passenger train, then was struck by the northbound freight. Johnson was instantly killed. Gay died at a Rocky Mount hospital early Saturday. The car was destroyed. first responders were J Ly Bass and his son Addison. Meanwhile a Simmons Gym American Legion show yielded three tight fights despite low attendance. Enfield’s Ros Parker knocked out Flash Blanton in the first round, Battling Love defeated Bob Moore, Riki Credle downed Jimmy Gilbert on points, and Matt Gordon and Shelby Rice fought to a tame draw. Referee Lester Edmondson officiated.
Four fire calls kept the Belmont Wel don fire crew busy over the past week with 14 to 22 men responding. A Belmont residence of Collina Fitts burned completely though the adjoining home was saved. Water shortages hindered efforts, and the loss was partly insured. Firefighters also tackled a Weldon call at R. S. Travis residence where belongings were destroyed. A four mile run delayed arrival at the acne. Mayor and department treated the crew to a supper. A chimney fire at Jim Bridges residence caused minor damage. A grass fire near the Standard Oil station caused no damage. Public support for the fire truck has improved, easing crowding at scenes.
Mrs Lela J Birdsong aged 57 died here January 18 funeral services were held at the Christian Church with Rev W H Grantham officiating Interment was in the family cemetery in Northampton County She was mother to Mrs H H Liles and Russell and Richard Birdsong of this city The infant son of Mr and Mrs Joseph F Coburn died here Monday Funeral services and burial were Tuesday afternoon Doe Pearce of Hopewell Virginia spent Sunday here visiting Mrs Nettie Morris
Raleigh reports North Carolina counties and municipalities issued only 804,500 in new bonds in 1931. Statewide bonded debt rose about 240 during the last nine months of 1931 to roughly 542 million for state and local units, averaging 174 per person. Halifax County held 1,204,000 in total bonded debt on January 1, 1932, paying 72,000 in the nine months, with no new bonds issued.

Tarboro firm McNair Moxes and Bass filed an involuntary bankruptcy petition this week on behalf of creditors. Stores are in Roanoke Rapids Greenville Clinton Tarboro Wilson and other nearby cities.
