Halifax County ABC Board Reports 1986 Profit

The Halifax County ABC Board shows a net profit of 69 456 12 in 1986 with total gross business 305 117 69 and overall 18 month figures since start include sales 439 061 74 net income 96 709 78 and sales tax paid 12 778 11. The board’s business methods earn praise from state officials.

Funeral for J M Jackson Held Amid Large Attendance

One of the area’s largest funerals was held Tuesday for J M Jackson secretary of Roanoke Mills Co who died Sunday night after a paralytic stroke. Services were at First Methodist Church with Rev E B Fisher and L I Stell officiating. Interment at Littleton followed Church attendance was so great many could not enter.

Nations set for Roosevelt birthday US party drive

The 55th birthday celebration for President Franklin D Roosevelt on January 30 will mobilize over 5000 communities to fund infantile paralysis research. Roanoke Rapids Sanitary District Names New Superintendent

Joe Shearin, listed on the Littleton road, was appointed by the Sanitary District Board to be Superintendent of the Roanoke Rapids Sanitary District. He starts tomorrow, succeeding Jesse Harrell who resigned for a Roanoke Mills Co. role. Harrell will stay until February first to train Shearin. board chairman L. W. Leggett and member A. M. Atkinson are noted as veteran and new terms respectively.

Car Turned Over On Hamilton Street

John Pierce of Weldon was treated for head injuries at Roanoke Rapids Hospital after his car overturned on Hamilton Street behind the Post Office. He left after first aid. Spectators said the vehicle flipped about four times. A small boy in the car was not injured.

Pioneer citizen Ed Woodruff was stricken tonight with pneumonia. Doctors report his condition critical as of late tonight.

Roanoke Rapids Post Office Sets 1936 Receipt Record

Roanoke Rapids Post Office reports a 1936 total receipts of 24570.50 dollars, up 17 percent from 1935. Money orders reached 30924 totaling 193061.02 dollars, with 6000 parcels insured and 10585 COD items processed. The office serves 16500 people with 16 regular staff and 22 during Christmas rush.

Fire at Roanoke Mills No 1 Dye Room

A fire in the dye room of Roanoke Mills No 1 started when cotton in a drying machine ignited at 2 o clock this morning. Joe Cline and R H Clary raised the alarm as employees fought the blaze. firemen arrived quickly but the ground floor filled with smoke. Main damage to cotton bales. lower parts submerged. Other mill departments continued running.
