Prominent citizens are invited to promote Roanoke Rapids and nearby towns by contributing articles on vital local topics. The project highlights cotton production roads schools waterpower and civic progress with photos to illustrate the business history and growth of the community.
The Philathea Class of Rose Mary Baptist Church elected officers for 1924. Officers include Mrs. T. M. Jenkins as Teacher, Mrs. J. O. Matthews as Assistant Teacher, Ora Killian as Assistant, Mrs. W. O. Iddings as President, Charlena Hart as Vice President, Helen Harris as Secretary, Lelia Bury as Assistant Secretary, Mrs. C. G. Matthews as Treasurer, and Mary Matthews as Reporter.
The annual stockholders meeting of the First National Bank of Roanoke Rapids was held last Tuesday at three o'clock. A board of directors for the ensuing year was elected, including C. A. Wyche and W. L. Long among others. Officers chosen by the board named W. T. Council as president S. F. Patterson and Dr. T. W. M. Long as vice presidents G. W. Eaton cashier and R. L. Cooper assistant cashier.
Maria J. F. Vincent expresses heartfelt gratitude to friends and neighbors for help and sympathy after the death of her son. The note thanks those whose untiring efforts provided comfort during the family’s loss.
A complaint to Secretary of State W N Everett in Raleigh alleges two Roanoke River bridges in Northampton County are dangerously curved and steep, passable for one vehicle at a time. Everett will have the issue fully reviewed by the state.

A 14 by 6 inch lead tablet was unearthed three feet underground in Washington North Carolina by Howard Kaufman. It bears an inscription citing Virginia Dare Captif Powhatan 1590 and prompts Smithsonian verification. Authorities weigh its potential link to the fate of the Jamestown colony and Dare’s burial site.
Roanoke Rapids defeated Henderson High 38 to 7 in a fast, exciting Tuesday contest at the local gym. Fred Vaughan led Roanoke Rapids with 23 points, impressing with 11 field goals and a foul shot, as Loyd Allen, Willie Glover, and others supported a strong team effort.
Miss Anna J. Upton age sixty two died at her sister Mrs W C Cherry on Hamilton Street after six months illness. She lived in Roanoke Rapids many years and was widely liked. Funeral Wednesday at home with Rev R H Broom, Cedarwood Cemetery interment. Out of town relatives attended from Washington D C Portsmouth Va Emporia Va and Ashland Va.
Haywood Williams and Dim Fogg, both colored, are in custody in Littleton on charges of selling stolen cotton and seed cotton. They allegedly acted with Willie Hicks, Fors, Willie Brown, and Hay Shearin in the October 25 theft of cotton and seed at One City of BE E. Wollett.
The Trinity Episcopal church in Scotland Neck was destroyed by fire last Sunday afternoon. The vestry announced plans to rebuild at once. Churches offered to host services including the Baptist and Methodist churches with a rotation for evening services and Sunday school in the school building.
A marble monument was unveiled at Boulevard cemetery in Baltimore Md to honor B Marks of Roanoke Rapids who died in an automobile accident about a year ago Family members present included Mrs B Marks and daughters Fleeta Marcella Fannie Sammy and other relatives The deceased was a prominent southern businessman with a respected family legacy in Roanoke Rapids and Baltimore newspapers carried the rites
The Woman's Club opened the year with a regular meeting in the high school auditorium followed by refreshments in the Home Economics department. The Rosemary Roanoke Rapids Club was organized to promote a cleaner healthier town and every interested woman is urged to join. Regular meetings are on the first Monday each month.
Charles and John Smith of Pine Tree Farm near Scotland Neck unload a carload of registered Guernsey cattle bought at Rocky Mount. They announce dedicating the Dest Guernsey bull to the Old North State dairy venture. The brothers will ship cream to dairies and market poultry, pledging fresh eggs and high quality blends. They plan to eventually abandon cotton in favor of wholesale dairy and poultry business.
