The body of a white man was found floating in the river near Pollocks Ferry on a December Saturday. The coroner and Northampton authorities were notified, and the body was recovered, examined for a gunshot wound, and buried after wrapping in a sheet. the deceased wore denim overalls, a blue serge coat, and size four shoes, with gloves found in a pocket.
A Christmas morning wedding joined Ernest Jones and Miss Rose Harrison at the home of Mr and Mrs Ben Taylor with Rev Raleegh L Topping officiating. The couple, well known in Roanoke Rapids, plan a long and happy life together while families and friends send best wishes.

Thursday from Richmond, Mr and Mrs A Wyche and family and Miss Susan Holaday spent time in Henderson. Dr John W Martin has been honorably discharged from the U S Army and returned as physician for Patterson Mills Co. Marie Bishop passed nursing certification in Asheville after training at Roanoke Rapids Hospital. Various local residents, including Lynch, Williams, Taylor, Satterwhite and Graham, visited or traveled to nearby towns. High School Honor Roll December lists 8th grade Josephine Hege Thelma Mills Gladys Morris Eva Sadler. 9th grade William Jackson Marion Saunders Helen Allsbrook Fannie Marks Ruth Mason Edith Matthews. 10th grade Charlie Spencer Jonnie Vick Bessie Hedgepeth Nellie Jones Traynhan Wyche Mary Matthews. 11th grade Geraldine Williams Eugene Lehman. Perfect attendance for December noted for 8th grade Jessie Brown Josephine Hege Thema Mills Fred Welch.
A Saturday event by the Barbecue and Brunswick Stew group in Oxford, led by Mrs. Fred Peck and Mrs. W. P. Taylor, raised 500 dollars for the local orphanage. A dining hall was set at a Wells Tillery location, with 120 dollars profit and about 75 dollars in canned goods donated. Community contributions from local men helped, and the Roanoke Rapids chapter of the Order of Eastern Star expresses thanks and praise.

The Herald reports the safe arrival in New York of Corporal Rowland Hale of Rosemary on December 26. Hale served with the British brigade, fought on the Cambria front breaking the Hindenberg line, and was wounded at the Somme on October 9. He was treated in a London hospital until December 15, then sailed to America.
On Christmas night near Shaw's store in South Rosemary a Ford driven by Exum Matthews tangled with a deer. Matthews sped, lost balance, and lit a fragment as the car abandoned the scene. News spread of hunters chasing the magical Ford quarry. Mack Johnson and Dulac Dickens reportedly found the deer, Dickens choking the pursuit to halt. The hunted animal was dressed and displayed as Christmas venison, with horns shown at Johnson's and Dickens' stables.

State Food Administrator Henry A Page punished ten Rocky Mount grocers for excess profit margins on flour and food. Inspector E L Harris found violations and merchants were not blacklisted but urged to publish statements to patrons. Possible revocation of licenses or blacklisting of several wholesalers mills and retailers expected soon.

A fragment shows a terse exchange where one person laughs at a matter and recalls a girl who boarded a Pullman car after bidding fourteen sorrowing salt ore farewell. She says she will travel to Atlantic City for a rest.
Mr W C Bass has resigned as postmaster at Rosemary effective March 1. He plans to move to Durham to go into business with his father in law. This resignation comes as a surprise to his many friends in the community.
The Corporation Commission granted a charter to the Roanoke Rapids Land Company with $100000 authorized capital and $30000 subscribed. The firm, chartered by S F Patterson C A Wyche and W L Long, will engage in real estate.
Mr John Sutton aged 53 died Tuesday at Roanoke Rapids Hospital from tuberculosis. He was survived by his wife and several children. His remains were buried Thursday at 3 PM in Roanoke Rapids Cemetery.
J E Spencer visited Brunswick County Virginia on business this week. Wade Dickens of Enfield visited his brother R L Dickens. John B Jenkins of Newport News Shipbuilding returned home Monday. Beth Bagley has returned from Jackson visits and will reside in Rosemary. Mrs W M Hardison and family of Belhaven plan to settle in Rosemary. Dr C T Windley spent Christmas with family at Belhaven. J J Banty and family visited relatives near Conway. Irene Cannon of Norfolk spent holidays with her parents. Rev B M Shelton and Mrs Shelton visited Mr and Mrs Geo Hayes. Mr Shelton attended Methodist Church services Sunday night. Pvt Willie Ferrell, recently returned from overseas, en route to New York, spent days in town. E T Todd accepted a job with Rosemary Manufacturing Company. Levut Loftin of Mt Olive visited friends here. Myrtle Anderton visiting friends in Emporia. Dr F G Jarman called home to Elkton Va for illness of sister Helen Jarman. John and Norfleet Vick spent days with relatives in Seaboard. Jennie Short returned from Franklin Va. Ivey Wright visited Margaret Matthews in Clinton. Julian McGee of the University S A T C is guest of his brother J F McGee. Bobby Muir of Westinghouse Electric Manufacturing Co. stopped over en route from Pittsburg to Atlanta. George Carmichael of the U S Marines spending a few days in Rosemary. Mrs Wm Belt and family of Creme NC have moved here and joined Rosemary Manufacturing. Mack Moore of Portsmouth Navy Yard visiting Mr C H Speight. Henry Harrell and family of Petersburg moved to Rosemary and joined Rosemary Manufacturing. L A Grissom resigned from Rosemary Manufacturing Co and moved to a new farm near Kittrell.
After two weeks holiday the Graded Schools will open Monday for work. Parents are urged to ensure their children attend and remain in school. An opportunity to make up lost time will be given to those absent due to sickness or other reasons. January will be devoted to a review prep for term examinations in the last week of the month. Attention is called to the compulsory term in effect now.
