Roanoke Rapids business leaders describe a very satisfactory Christmas season with optimism for relief from shortages within six months. Stores report strong sales across drugs, toys, and small electrics, while nylons and men’s wear shortages persist and inventory remains uneven.

Guernsey Cow Sets Record for Milk and Butterfat Output

Chockoyette Hildren, a daughter of Argilla Oliver and owned by W L Manning of Roanoke Rapids, completed an Advance Register record with 10257.5 pounds of milk and 501.7 pounds of butterfat from twice daily milking over ten months. Argilla Oliver has sixteen daughters in the American Guernsey Cattle Club Performance Register. The record was supervised by North Carolina State College and reported for approval and publication.

The Blue Smock Featured In North Carolina Art Show

The Blue Smock by B C Langford of this city was shown at the tenth annual North Carolina art display in Raleigh last week. Exhibits will travel to Chapel Hill and then across the state. Langford and his wife will spend January in Sarasota Florida for study at the Farnsworth School of Art.

New Officer Will Join Police Force

L. H. Nelson a former highway patrolman who served about five years at Rich Square will join the Roanoke Rapids police department on January 15 per Chief T. J. Davis. His addition brings the force to ten officers total.

December arrest report shows 95 arrests in Roanoke Rapids

Roanoke Rapids police reported 95 arrests in December with offenses ranging from burglary to traffic violations. Property valued at 1784.50 was reported stolen, 127.00 recovered by officers, and 60 people were jailed for drunkenness.

Halifax County Sanatorium Reopens After Board Meeting

Halifax County Sanatorium reopened last Monday after the December 17 board meeting at Weldon. The hospital issued admission policies for tuberculosis patients, named Savannah McDonald as superintendent, with Dr. F. W. M. White and Dr. Robert Young in charge of care and administration.

Man Found Dead on Highway in North Carolina

Mack Soloman, 60 year old tenant farmer, was found dead on Weldon Roanoke Rapids highway early Tuesday by his wife after missing since Monday night. Investigators found no foul play signs, a small facial scratch tied to a possible fall, and Soloman had a history of heart trouble.

Two Watches and Bracelet Stolen From Jewel Shop

Police investigate a break in at the Jewel Shop in downtown Roanoke Rapids after midnight last Sunday. Officers found a broken window and, with manager M. C. Moore, recovered two watches and a ladies bracelet missing. No arrests have been made.

The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reported one of the quietest Christmas weeks in years with no major crimes. only a few arrests were made for drunkenness.
