Bad weather delays work on the Avenue. Two blocks in the Northward business section are nearly finished with storm sewers laid. Curbing is half done and could end in three days of good weather. Digging starts on the south side next week with a partial completion in the South Ward.

N C State Tax Man Coming to Roanoke Rapids
A. Dunn Jr. Deputy Revenue Commissioner will be in Roanoke Rapids March 7 and 14 to help prepare State Income Tax returns due by midnight March 15. Returns required for singles earning over 1000 and married couples over 2000. Also shareholders of foreign corporations must pay on the portion not taxed at the source. Dunn will be in the post office lobby.

Mrs. Lee Sheffield In Danger From Car Crash Injuries
Mrs. Lee Sheffield remains in critical condition with a broken pelvis and fractured spine after a late Friday night collision on a hill in a rainstorm near Fredericksburg. Her sister Mrs. Coston Rice and husband Lee Sheffield also injured with three broken ribs each. An army officer in the other car was unhurt.

Two Local Boys Held on Robbery Charges
Julian Hale and Willie Deaton are in Jackson jail awaiting trial after a Garysburg store burglary Friday night. A witness alerted Weldon police, who caught them in the act. They were jailed for the night and attempted an escape but were stopped.

Funeral Friday for John L Patterson Leader in Roanoke Rapids and Richmond
The community learns of the sudden death of John L Patterson from a heart attack in Richmond following an April business visit. He led Citizens Bank & Trust Co of Roanoke Rapids, helped organize Rosemary Mfg and served on multiple boards including Roanoke Mills Co. and the Episcopal Church. Funeral is Friday at 4 p.m. on St Andrews Lane Westhampton Richmond. Patterson was active in civic life and held regional leadership roles.
