War Department reports two local soldiers killed in action
Private Kenneth L. Evans of Route 1 Roanoke Rapids and Frank W. Harris of Swan Quarter were listed by the War Department as killed in action in Germany and France. Evans had been reported missing since January 25 and killed later in France. Harris died February 8 in Germany after enlisting in 1942 and training at Fort Knox.

A reader recalls the small white mileage record form issued with A ration coupons. Ration board employees require the form for any gasoline request. A man asked for gas and was told to fill an application, then to show his mileage record, which he joked was broken. The board wants the white form, not the speedometer.
Auto Hit By Troop Train Kills Halifax Woman
Bertie Silver a about 50 year old negro woman was instantly killed when an Atlantic Coast Line troop train crashed into the automobile she rode in at a county road crossing about three miles from Halifax. Renzo Silver her husband driver was uninjured. Bessie Silver and another woman were slightly hurt.

Pfc Clary Reported Missing in Action in Belgium
Private first class Samuel Snellon Clary, son of Mr and Mrs S E Clary of Brunswick Virginia, has been reported missing in action in Belgium since January 8. He entered the Army in March 1944 and went overseas in October 1944, according to a message received by his wife Edith Clary.
