Funeral for W. S. Batton in Roanoke Rapids
Funeral services were held for W. S. Batton a longtime Roanoke Rapids resident and former foreman at Rosemary Manufacturing. He died February 9 at his Jefferson Street home and is buried in Roanoke Rapids Cemetery. Rev. L. I. Stell and Rev. J. N. Bynum conducted the service. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers were named.

Thieves Try to Burglarize Halifax Clerk of Court Office
An attempted burglary targeted the Clerk of Court office and vault at the Halifax courthouse this week. Clerk A Leonidas Hux found a tampered screen and an attempted vault entry by a window but no entry was made and no clues or suspect identified.

Tragic Find Ends Search For Missing Roanoke Youth
Ralph Merritt, 21, was found dead along the Roanoke River four miles upstream from the Roanoke Rapids bridge after a 64 day disappearance that began December 8 1936 when he and Peter Smith left to get food. A search party recovered the body late Tuesday afternoon fueling rumors of foul play as shots were heard at disappearance.
