Mrs. Mattie Cooley 44 wife of Walter F. Cooley died Monday at Roanoke Rapids Hospital after an illness of several months. Funeral at Corinth Church with Rev. J. B. Kirk officiating. Interment in church cemetery. Survived by husband mother Mrs. Fallie Wright eight children two brothers four sisters and a sister in law to Mrs. M. Thompson.

Postmaster John I. Vest announces new city delivery territory in Roanoke Rapids extending Roanoke Avenue to the depot and returning on Hamilton Street. Additional sections will join once they meet Post Office Department rules. Delivery begins after house numbering mail receptacles and sidewalk improvements are completed.

John Allen Buried At Smith's Church
John Timothy Allen, 70, a respected farmer of the South Rosemary community, died Sunday at home from pneumonia after a week of illness. Funeral services were held by Rev. D. M. Sharpe with burial in Smith Church Cemetery on Monday. He is survived by three daughters and two sons. Mr. Allen was a lifelong resident and leading farmer of the area. Miss Gladys Bowen spent last weekend at Emporia, Virginia.

The Roanoke Rapids special charter could be revoked with eight months of state control. State standards would drop local choices including music and home economics. Local autonomy would end as Raleigh boards oversee expenses and building plans, harming the city’s school system and its 2600 students. Local residents vow to fight to preserve self government.
