Auto Crash Near Weldon Leaves Several Hurt
Nine people were riding in a car that swerved off a highway near NB Service Station Christmas Eve and plunged into a ditch. Driver George Smith of Roanoke Rapids faced a reckless driving charge with a $500 bond after state police investigated. George Livesay Jr. was hospitalized in Richmond in critical condition with a possible lifelong paralysis.

Man Dies From Woodside Fire Near Char ley Grant
Henry Boozy Smith, 30, a Black man with a history of fits, died eight hours after sustaining severe burns from a fire he likely started while gathering wood in the woods across the river near Char ley Grant's yesterday. Local reports place the incident in the Char ley Grant vicinity and note the fatal injuries occurred despite efforts to save him.

Roanoke Rapids executive Hugh D Camp resigns to lead Kraft Paper unit
Hugh D Camp resigns as vice president of Roanoke Mills Co and Patterson Mills Co and moves mid January to Franklin Virginia to manage the four million dollar Chesapeake Camp Corporation, soon starting construction near Camp Manufacturing Co. Camp will oversee plant tasks and machinery, returning to birthplace where his father started a major lumber firm. Mrs Camp and daughter Caroline will join later for Florida then a home on Camp's farmhouse in Franklin.

Fatal Burn Death at Roanoke Rapids Hospital
A man caught fire while fleeing across a field was seen by relatives before being rushed to Roanoke Rapids Hospital. He died last night from his injuries.
