Mills at Patterson Roanoke and Rosemary Mfg will close for Christmas and New Year holidays per Executive Order 9240. Christmas shutdown runs midnight Dec 23 to 7 am Dec 28. New Year break ends 7 am Jan 4, 1943. Four day Christmas weekend, three day New Year weekend. some inventory workers keep Dec 31. Halifax Paper, Manchester Board and Paper also announce extended breaks.

Postmaster L G Shell announced the local office may stay open until 5 PM Saturday if patron demand supports the extra hours to handle the Christmas mail rush. If not, the office will close at noon as usual.

Belmont youth serves in Army in England

He is the son of Mr and Mrs Pleasant T Taylor of Belmont and has been in the Army a year and a half. His parents learned two weeks ago that he is somewhere in England and reports indicate he is getting along splendidly.

Navy Gunner Wells Missing Since July 1942 Message

The son of the late J. C. Wells and Mrs Elizabeth C Wells of 1135 Hamilton Street is serving as a gunner in the U S Navy somewhere at sea. He sailed from New York about six weeks ago and has not been heard from since. He joined the Navy July 8 1942.

Roanoke Rapids stores extend hours as Christmas nears

With six shopping days left before Christmas, most Roanoke Rapids stores will stay open until 9 PM Friday through Christmas Eve. Stores will close Friday December 25 and Saturday December 26, as urged by the Roanoke Rapids Merchants Association and echoed by the North Carolina Merchants Association.

Roanoke Rapids Tops List for Liquor Permit Books

The Halifax County ABC Board expects rapid exhaustion of coupon books for spirituous beverages despite adding 2,600 books from state headquarters. Roanoke Rapids receives 1,000 books as the city leads registrations, with 2,345 registrants recorded last week and projections of 3,345 for the city alone.

Halifax County Local Draft Board No 1 reports only 54 youths born between July 1 and August 31 1924 registered in the city by Friday. The governor sets further dates for later registrations as war continues and Sunday exemptions apply.
