The Reverend Gordon L. Price arrives to preach his first sermon at First Baptist Church of Roanoke Rapids this Sunday morning. Union service talk may unfold at night if area churches join. Price, former Pine St. Baptist member from Richmond, led B Y P U activity and studied at University of Richmond and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Andrew Lynch of Littleton died in Roanoke Rapids Hospital from a stomach gun wound suffered Saturday night. He was shot once by Robert Boyd of near Littleton during a drunken quarrel that began over Lynch's...
Mrs. Anna Turner died three days after blood poisoning from a nose boil. She was 44, wife of George R. Turner, with children Mrs George Smith Helen Turner and Jim mie, all of the city. Funeral services were at 212 Jackson Street conducted by Reverend S H Bradley, burial in Emporia Virginia. Survived by husband, two daughters, and a son. The Turners had lived here about twenty years, and Mr Turner and daughter Helen Turner worked for Roanoke Mills Co.
The Herald announces its next issue will print one day early ahead of Christmas. Copies go to press Wednesday night December 20 and reach readers a day sooner than usual. Advertisers and reporters are urged to submit copy one day earlier than normal.
The Reverend J. J. Boone, new pastor of Rosemary Methodist Church, filled the pulpit last Sunday in his first service here. A native of Northampton County born near Jackson, he came from Bailey North Carolina and attended Trinity College. He also attended the Duke banquet held Tuesday night.
Rufus Vick of Roanoke Rapids is appointed CWA disbursing officer for Halifax County with responsibility for payrolls and wage distribution. The move follows state CWA routing, aided by County Welfare Officer Hall and Commissioner W. F. Joyner. Vick, based at Halifax Welfare HQ, previously worked for the State Department of Agriculture after NC State College graduation.
Horace Lee Cantrill about six was struck by a car driven by Herbert Williams a Negro employee of Halifax Paper Co on Roanoke Avenue this afternoon. Witnesses say the child ran into the street and the car stopped within a few feet. The boy received first aid at the hospital and left. Williams agreed to pay the hospital bill and was not held.
A car collision in Weldon this morning killed J. J. Amerson and critically injured Miss Lucy Banks of Wilson. The vehicle crashed into a telephone pole near the graded school as they journeyed toward Richmond. Banks was taken to Roanoke Rapids Hospital in critical condition with severe injuries including brain trauma and paralysis.
The Community Christmas Tree is being placed this year on the corner of Roanoke Avenue and 6th Street across from the Mayor home. A large tree has been procured and is being planted today by a city crew. Light decorations will be added this week by a Power Co crew and the tree will be lit nightly through Christmas. Plans for a community singing on Christmas Eve are under consideration with details to appear next week. City government Merchants Association Kiwanis Club and Power Co sponsor the event.
