The War Department announced plans to discharge selectees and National Guardsmen after 14 to 18 months of service, instead of the 30 month maximum. An initial 200,000 men will be released by December 10, prioritizing hardship cases, those 28 by July 1, and married men after 12 months. Regulars with three year terms ending before year end may reenlist.
Workers planning tobacco industry jobs should verify their Social Security account number card now. Marshall H. Barney of the Rocky Mount Social Security Office says employees must show their card to employers to receive proper wage credits. If lost, apply for a duplicate via a blank form to the Rocky Mount office. a new card is mailed. Those never issued a number can obtain an original by applying.
The Levon Theatre in Weldon shows Sunday and Monday feature films starring Clark Gable and Rosalind Russell in They Met In Bombay with a news reel and act. A second film Adventure In Washington with Herbert Marshall and Virginia Bruce screens Tuesday and Wednesday plus a comedy and act.
Major Leon M. Hall of the Chaplain Corps U S Army will fill the First Methodist Church pulpit Sunday at 11 am during Rev Daniel Lane’s absence. Hall, based at Fort Bragg, formerly pastored here and is welcomed by many friends in the area.
Roanoke Rapids girls lost 3-0 at Raleigh Sunday afternoon. Raleigh pitcher Minnie Lee Cole held locals to two hits, the only Roanoke Rapids baserunners. Raleigh scored in the first inning and twice in the third as Amna Jones led the visitors with two singles for three.
Lemual Bridges and James Albert Threewits spent Sunday in the area, as noted in local social entries.
George McDaniel Negro was shot in the arm last Saturday night about 11 o clock at a piccolo joint near Garysburg by James Lee who fled afterward to avoid arrest. Sheriff J C Stephenson said Lee went to a Williams run place in an angry mood and challenged patrons to cross a ground mark, then fired when McDaniel stepped across. Most in attendance were at a drunken frolic. McDaniel was treated at the local hospital and discharged Monday morning. Officers have not yet captured Lee.
