Roanoke Rapids Power Plant Fire Cuts Roanoke Rapids Weldon and Halifax Power

An electrical fire in the big switch room at the Vepco power plant caused a blackout for Roanoke Rapids Weldon and Halifax from midnight until Monday. Grounding at 11:30 Sunday night sparked flames that damaged switches, with losses around 7500 dollars. Local crews and a Richmond team restored service by Monday afternoon. Local mills closed Monday while repairs and temporary switches were installed. A charred rat near the wiring is mentioned as a possible cause. A separate federal tax case involves three individuals facing charges in other counties for thefts. One defendant, Lewis R. Harris, had lived in Roanoke Rapids years earlier.
