Soft Earth Saves Workman From Serious Injury
A 35 ft base crane toppled in Roanoke Rapids due to soft dirt after rains and buried Vernon R. Odom of Halifax Paper Company at 3 p.m. yesterday. Workmen freed him in 30 minutes. X rays at Roanoke Rapids Hospital showed only bruises. Personnel manager J B Edee said he would likely be back on the job soon. Workmen said the crane would have likely injured Odom more if the dirt had not given way.

Owen Luke Linton of Roanoke Rapids was arrested in Americus Georgia by Police Chief T J Davis. He waived extradition and is free on $500 bond charged with abducting Mrs Walter Norwood of Roanoke Rapids and Americus two weeks ago. A preliminary hearing is set in days. Employment Office records sharp rise in job applications
The Roanoke Rapids Employment Office reports a 91 percent rise in active job applications for June to July over April to May, with female applications up 134 percent and veteran applications up 23 percent. Total contacts increased 61 percent. end July active applications stood at 437 versus 226 in May. Females are 59 percent, veterans 20 percent, and 21 percent are male non veterans. Layoffs in mills and construction, plus 50 workers cut at a paper mill, drive unemployment. job openings rose to 33 in June July with openings in clerical, sales, machinist, auto mechanic, and laborer roles. agriculture referrals increased in July.

A new Highway Patrol headquarters and a 250 watt FM radio station are being built one mile south of Halifax on US 301. Cpl. Logan B.
