Early this month the Roanoke and Deep Building edition was praised as a credit to publishers and the town. The issue features lively ads and notes on local culture including births, concerts, organ recitals, and community events in Weldon and surrounding counties.
Beginning June first the boys aged 12 to 15 will be eligible to play in the Junior League of Roanoke Rapids. Eight teams will compete with some teams drawn from area churches. Games are set for Monday Wednesday and Friday afternoons with top players spotlighted on weekly standings and sports sheets.
Pool and billiard fans gather at Cherry's pool room at 7 30 each evening to watch twenty one entrants in a three week pool tournament begun last night. Competitors include Jack De Vane Hugh Rooke Jasper Mills Red Taylor Gene Kimball Fenton Johnson Jeff Lassiter Ted Speight Geo Burgwyn Sam Jones George Murray Wi Daniel Joe Williams Wrennie Elmore Clifton Grant Ed Simpkins Shaker Teele Mickey White Ovid Harris Elbert White Bennie Hutcherson Miss Lena Wright and Johnnie Horton spent Sunday in Norfolk.
The Gary audit case ends with a compromise settling a net deficiency of 1247.19 thousand dollars after a lengthy inquiry. The county will pay about 5 thousand dollars in audit costs and possibly 20 percent of the final balance for other expenses, leaving roughly 5.5 thousand dollars net to Halifax County. The court notes inadequate records and prior no audits contributed to the shortage, while the American Surety Company is released from liability.

M. D. Collier in the North Ward and L. M. Jenkins in the South Ward were selected as Democratic nominees for three year terms as City Commissioners. There were no other nominations. The final city election will be held on the first Tuesday.
A schedule spans April 30 to September 1 with games at Slagels Lake, Simmons Park, and various towns including Graham Seaboard Red Sox and Peters burg. The Indians split a doubleheader 7-8 and 6-2 against Atlantic Christian College, while Henderson all stars routed the Indians 12-1 at Slagels Lake.
Coach Welch's Indians defeated Atlantic Christian College in a doubleheader last Saturday. The opener stretched to eight frames with John son starting on the mound before being relieved in the fourth inning.
Those who have not registered on the county and State books may register this Saturday, with books remaining open until May 21. J. P. Welch oversees the North Ward and C. C. Shell the South Ward. Citizens who wish to vote in county, state and presidential elections should register now.
John Smith announces as an independent candidate for City Commissioner in the South Ward challenging Democratic incumbent T M Jenkins. The election is next Tuesday May 5. No independent candidate has announced against M D Collier in the North Ward.
The Jackets beat Elizabeth City 6 to 3 behind McNeil who fanned 13 and allowed three singles. Lefty Starke hit a homer and two singles, while Dickens Womble and Grant added two singles each. This was Jax 13th game of the season, 12 wins and one loss, remaining undefeated at Simmons Park in state play since 1920.
The Associated Charities holds a May 5 meeting at 8 in the Episcopal Church to elect officers for the year and review the past year’s work. President J N Bynum notes past large turnouts have dwindled to eight or ten, urging broader church and community support.
More than 300 visiting delegates attended the Rocky Mount District Conference of the Methodist Church held at First Methodist Church on Wednesday and Thursday. Rev L B Jones presided. opening address by Rev T G Vickers and sermon by Rev H L Hendricks. Distinctive reports on Christian education and spiritual life highlighted proceedings with visitors from Duke University and Raleigh. The next meeting site was to be decided that afternoon.
Ollie Acree starred for Coach Hoyle as he pitched near a perfect game against Elizabeth City. Acree allowed two hits through eight innings as Beate City Jackets beat Forman and swept the series advancing toward the Eastern North Carolina championship.
A Halifax County Taxpayers League meeting drew 500 to 750 people to hear candidates discuss tax relief and cost cutting. Alfred N. Martin and others urged revaluation of property and consolidated offices while officials pledged economy, opposing general sales tax and promising to lower expenses and seek voter support.
