The Roanoke Rapids Merchants Association calls a Tuesday meeting on April 22 at 2 30 p.m. in the Municipal building court room. Members are urged to attend as plans for spring and early summer trading activities will be discussed and formed. Secretary Mrs Lillian Bell Thorne emphasized the meeting’s importance for all members.
Leggett Department Store unveils a 25000 expansion plan with construction to begin the week of June 1. The project includes a second story addition to the Roanoke Avenue and Eleventh Streets building, with final plans approved.
Halifax County Commissioners and Citizens Realty Insurance Agency agreed on 490 as the damage amount for the Roanoke Rapids Armory fire on April 1. Lee Wheeden and Company won the reconstruction contract and will begin immediately. Project duration is 90 days to four months with WPA labor resuming after private work completes.
In Roanoke Rapids on May 6 an election race emerged as Kelly Jenkins filed to challenge incumbent mayor W Bernard Allsbrook who filed the day before. Incumbent commissioners face no opposition while R I Stark and M D Collier run unopposed in the South and North Wards respectively. Allsbrook is completing his first two year term as mayor since succeeding Jenkins in 1939, who previously served four mayoral terms beginning with Greater Roanoke Rapids incorporation in 1931.
