Filing closed with F. C. Williams seeking re election in the North Ward and Byron Gurley for the South Ward short term. They join J. C. Smith as unopposed long term South Ward candidate. Mayor race on May 2 features Kelly Jenkins and Bernard Allsbrook.
City urges residents to walk to Simmons Park for Wake Forest versus North Carolina game at 4 p.m. Officials assure a 5 000 spectator capacity, announce business closures at 3 p.m., flag decorations in school colors, extra police, and support for Roanoke Rapids boys Irvin Dickens and George Nethercutt as state eyes the event.
Thirty youngsters entered the city wide contest with Marion Edward Hudson 12 months old winning first prize of 5.00 after 1551 votes. Doris Darling Taylor 20 months old took second with 1416 votes and Mary Annie Womble 2 years 6 months placed third with votes.
The Roanoke Rapids Merchants Association ended its regular session with a vote to close Tuesday April 18 for the Carolina Wake Forest game. Secretary Lillian Bell Thorne to deliver a petition to non members seeking cooperation.
