The Roanoke Rapids News notes National Cotton Week to run the week of May 6 with the slogan Everybody Uses Cotton. The event aims to raise citizen awareness of cotton’s varied uses and highlights Halifax County as a cotton region. The Roanoke Rapids textile center and banner grower observe with interest.
Money from the Minstrel fund will be used by the local Kiwanis Club to furnish school lunches for underprivileged and undernourished children. The agriculture committee reported on federal loans for farmers and helping locals with garden plots. An inter-club meeting with Scotland Neck Club was announced for May and the Minstrel committee set barrberene for May 9. George Nethercutt introduced as Senior Class member for this month.
The County Board of Commissioners postponed a final decision on a 16 000 expansion near the Court House until next month while noting funding could come from regular county funds without raising taxes. They also approved paving requests and road improvements to Halifax Hollister and Roanoke Rapids Thelma, and announced a six week typhoid clinic at Jackson Street beginning April 15 conducted by Drs Jarman and Covington.
The Senate Finance Committee moved to reduce the general sales tax from three to two percent while reporting the Hill Liquor Control Bill with a no prejudice note. The panel will meet again before sending the revenue bill to the Senate floor, likely Monday, amid debate over deficits and revenue projections.
