Officials estimate fire damage at the armory, with repairs awaiting agreement among County Commissioners and the insurer. Front roof supports must be replaced, walls and columns damaged, delaying reconstruction by about 60 days or more. Estimated losses range from fifteen thousand to sixty thousand dollars, with most guesses near thirty-five thousand.
A Tuesday fire swept through the front of Roanoke Rapids Armory under construction, causing estimated damages of up to 35 000 dollars. WPA official Earl Parker described the start in the foyer when an asphalt kettle boiled over, sending flammable liquid into the subfloor and roof. Firemen fought the blaze as estimates varied widely and insurance covered the project.
